Southpointe Farmer's Market on the Far South Side of Columbus is having their Grand Opening tomorrow with a ribbon cutting at 3 pm. Activities for the kiddies, lots of community info. The mkt. is sponsored through a grant from the Children's hunger Alliance. Just and FYI!!

why is it on a friday from 2-6? who can go to that? don't most people work during this time?

I went, because I was off work today. There was one table with some strawberries, a man with a card table holding a couple of cabbages and some green beans, and someone had brought in some hanging flower baskets. The other 6 tables set up were all for banks (?) or community organizations. That was it.
I did get some strawberries, and they were pretty good. Otherwise it was a waste of time.
Inside the old K-Mart, though, there is a good antique mall with some pretty reasonable prices. That was worth checking out.
ETA - Oh, I forgot! There was a live cover band, with a couple of middle-aged ladies who were really rockin' out! That was kind of fun.

Hrm. That's a sad report. It is early in the growing season though. I'd say to give it another shot in a month.

A farmers' market that says it's the only one in Columbus that accepts food stamps opened today to provide affordable, nutritious food to South Side residents.
The South Side Farmers' Market at SouthPointe Marketplace, 3459 S. High St., also intends to educate adults and children about healthful eating habits and lifestyle decisions, its organizers said.
Ã¢â‚¬Å“We're helping focus people to pay attention to health indicators and be conscious of their health,Ã¢â‚¬Â said J.D. Beiting, director of strategic alliances for Children's Hunger Alliance.
Research has been conducted on areas struggling with obesity and access to food, said Julie Accetta, spokeswoman for Children's Hunger Alliance.
Ã¢â‚¬Å“This ZIP code has really poor nutrition and really high rates of obesity, so this farmers' market is part of a big initiative,Ã¢â‚¬Â she said.
In addition to the fresh food outside, people are invited inside the building to receive free blood-pressure checks and medical advice from Columbus Public Health.

I was a little confused by this article. I may not understand all of the differences in various "food stamps," but most farmer's markets accept WIC, whatever it is that seniors get, and I think something else. Where ever you get your public assistance, you can take some of the $$ in vouchers for the farmer's market. Not every vendor accepts them, but a lot do. Also, I think all of the farmers at the Health dept's farmers markets this summer accept them.
