The juxtaposition of traditional crystalline, glazed pottery with more contemporary mediums in Slow Tide, offers an interpretation of the gradual shift of ideas that have influenced art through ceramics, sculpture and video installation. Slow Tide at Gallery 831 features work which exemplifies both natural and man-made tides from 3 Columbus College of Art and Design graduates: Justin Reese, Ian Keller and Adam Henderson.
Justin Reese graduated from CCAD in 2010 with a focus in ceramics. Reese’s work consists of crystalline glazed porcelain vessels, which pair his love of pottery with scientific experimentation. In order for the crystals to form within the glaze, Reese creates the perfect atmosphere in the kiln, allowing nature to act upon and accentuate the work. Justin combines temperature holds and glaze mixtures, which freezes the crystals in place.
Ian Keller received his BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 2010 with a focus in sculpture. He currently works with electronic and light art, highlighting contemporary culture's dependence and fear of electronic devices.
Adam Henderson was raised in Cincinnati and later earned his BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design. Adam spent two years driving across America and living in the High Sierras of California where he recorded over 2000 videos documenting his surroundings. During this time he began tracking and noting the different imagery he had been digesting, building a complex catalogue of digital media from which his current works stem from. In an artistic notion to define what it means to make art in a digital era, Adam is working on several self titled experimental "Beat" films along with large scale collages and drawings. He composes these pieces in his studio based out of Chop-Chop gallery in Columbus, Ohio.
