Slow Food Columbus announces...
Snowville Creamery's Warren Taylor honored as food-system pioneer
On February 23, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Wexner Center, Slow Food Columbus will bestow its inaugural Snailblazer Award, in recognition of pioneering contributions to a sustainable food system. The public is invited to attend. Delicious hors d'oeuvres, courtesy of Slow Food Columbus and created by Slow Food members John and Kimberly Skaggs from Heirloom, will be available, as well as a cash bar.
Slow Food, an organization whose symbol is the snail, was founded as a reaction against fast food and the alarming health and environmental costs that it entails. The Snailblazer Award is designed to draw the public's attention to an individual or organization within the community whose dedication to sustainability and to transforming the food system captures the spirit of Slow Food.
Slow Food Columbus has chosen Warren Taylor of Snowville Creamery, a delegate to Slow Food's 2010 Terra Madre convention in Italy, as the recipient of its inaugural Snailblazer Award. The relative youth of Taylor's Snowville, which was founded in 2006, belies its impact, in large part due to Taylor's monumental energy and goodwill: in a few short years the small creamery's milk has achieved a taken-for-granted status in the mid-Ohio sustainable food community.
In recognition of the passion and drive with which Taylor champions the ideals of Slow Food, Slow Food Columbus is donating $500 to Snowville's community-sourced Kickstarter campaign, designed to fund a yogurt-production facility. What's more, the nonprofit will donate even more money to Snowville's yogurt campaign... but only if you will. Taking a cue from November's Big Give campaign, Slow Food Columbus will designate matching funds to be added to every Kickstarter pledge made between now and February 10.
The Snailblazer award will be given to Taylor by Jeni Britton-Bauer of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, herself an icon of sustainability and a fellow 2010 Terra Madre delegate. In recognition of Taylor's accomplishments, the Wexner Center and Heirloom will donate time and food to the event. Attendance is free, but in order to assist them in gauging demand an RSVP is requested at [debra at slowfoodcolumbus dot org].
