Slow Food Athens Summer Fiesta and Siesta
June 20th and 21st (Athens, Ohio)

Join Slow Food Columbus as the Snails Slide South again for a full weekend in Athens.

We will meet up at the Athens Farmers Market at 10 AM on Saturday June 20th to sample the 40 plus Slow Food friendly market vendors. Many of these folks sell their products to Columbus markets and restaurants Ã¢â‚¬â€œ now you can go local with these locavores.

As a bonus, we will be visiting during the market Berry Bake-Off, so even more goodies with be available for hungry Slow Foodies. Sarah the market manager will give us a quick history of the market at 10:30 AM.

Our next stop will be at 1:00 PM for the grand tour of Snowville Creamery.

At 3:30 PM, we will arrive at Integration Acres to meet with Chris and learn about produce, pawpaws and goats.

At 7:00, we will return to Athens for dinner at Zoe. We will be dining on a five course meal of many of the items we saw at market in the morning. Tickets are limited to 26 people.

After dinner we will take a break to explore Athens at night. Some people might return to Columbus while others may stay in town. We have also been invited to camp out on a 100 acre farm with an area foodie for free.

On Sunday, we sleep in a bit, then at 10 AM we head to JanaÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Soul Food Kitchen for brunch made with bunch of local produce and products. Tickets are limited to 26 souls for this event as well.

Around noon, we will carpool to Sassafras Farms for a tour. Our host will be Ed Perkins, the dean of all things organic in Athens and former OEFFA (Ohio Ecological Food and Farm President).

Tickets are selling out quickly. This is your chance to hang out with frequent CU posters Bear, (Taco) Drew, CMH Gourmand, Hungry Woolf and the other usual suspects.

First of all, kudos to the Gourmand for putting in many long, hard hours bringing this event together. Usually Slow Food events involve coordinating with only one or two businesses or people, which can be more time-consuming than one would expect; having done so myself, and knowing the sporadic availability of some of the people involved, this five-plus-entity extravaganza was truly a labor of love, and I have no doubt that that'll be reflected in a very memorable weekend.

Camping, last I heard, was going to be either at Snowville itself or at Warren (Mr. Snowville)'s house -- not sure which, but the latter wouldn't surprise me, as Warren strikes me as the sort of guy who'd very happily give you the shirt off his back.

Cider? Last I heard, everything was BYOB where the law permits. But the CMHG will have the final word on that one....

Camping details will go to those that sign up. Warren from Snowville has offered spaces to us on his 100 acre farm.

Parents in town for the weekend - bring your parents for the day and head home at night.

Kate Lainhart at Greener Grocer deserves the kudos for this event....and she is not even a member. She had most of the contacts, first hand experiences and the mojo to get this going.

This will be a great weekend!!!!!

There are still some tickets left. Great food, fun people and a lot to see and do.

We still have a few tickets left for this weekend excursion. This a buffet style event - you don't have to sign up for the whole deal - you can sign up for Saturday or Sunday - however I would definitely go for one of the meals - the rough draft menus look great!

Agreed. We actually get a fair number of requests for no-cost or low-cost events, and as far as cost goes this one is one of the friendliest I've seen come across my inbox -- about a day and a half of tours and foodie info, all for, at most, the cost of a couple of meals; and for the most part the cost is less than what you'd pay for the meals if you bought them yourself because the organizers worked out a group rate.

Hello all

For those thinking of doing the Saturday Dinner at Zoe and/or the Sunday Brunch at Jana's - I would encourage you to make your move ASAP - traffic is moving on these events - the spots are limited and the only events with a cost (both are a great value).

The Farmers Market will have a mini Q & A session for us Saturday at 10:30 - there are plenty of eating options there. And we may have an informal meet up and Q and A at Casa Nueva on Sunday.... working out details right now.

This the weekend between classes at OU - so this is the "Slowest" weekend of the year - a great time to visit. For those not wanting to camp there are many good Hotels and a few B & B's in the area.

And if you want to do both days on the cheap - you can get to Athens from Columbus in 1 1/2 hours.

It is offical - an informal Q & A has been added and confirmed at Casa Nueva for Sunday at 3:30 as our end of the weekend finale!

Move your butts on the Zoe's tickets because I am calling in with a head count.

Seconded. I realize that people like to hold off on deciding whether or not they're going to go... wait for a weekend weather forecast, or until they get a sense of whether they're going to be in the mood... but, although that's fine for the tours and so on, it'd be polite to give the restaurants an idea of how many hungry foodies will be descending on their establishments, if possible. Thanks.
