Slow Food Columbus wrote Announcing Slow Wine!
At our last Executive Committee meeting we realized that we don't hear from our members and the food-loving public in general as much as we'd like to, so we decided that we're going to try a new series of events: Slow Wine! The idea is simple: As many of us can make it (usually one or two, probably, but maybe more) will head to a local wine shop, get a glass or a bottle of wine, and just hang out for an hour or so. If any of you -- members, nonmembers on the mailing list, people curious about Slow Food, strangers (well... not too strange) -- want to drop by for a glass of wine and a chat, feel free! The inaugural Slow Wine evening will be Wednesday, July 23, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Spagio Cellars. We anticipate being at Spagio Cellars approximately every other week at least through July and August.

For what it's worth -- don't get too excited, it may just be me at this one. :wink: Colleen's at her parents' in Michigan. She'll try to make it back in time, but she says no guarantees.

There may be more to talk about than I'd realized when we scheduled the event. I just got wind of this article in tomorrow's NYT, which -- while it publicizes Slow Food Nation in September -- nevertheless portrays the American branch of Slow Food in less than glowing terms. It accuses Slow Food USA of elitism and snobbery, while noting without apparent irony about the international organization (which it doesn't accuse of either) that "You can buy a cashmere truffle-hunting vest embroidered with the Slow Food snail logo at the main office in Bra." I can only imagine what kind of an uproar it would cause if Slow Food USA were to sell cashmere morel-hunting vests with snail logos.... :roll:
But I digress.

Up to you -- it'll cost you whatever you buy from Spagio Cellars. There's no set tasting or anything of the sort, just sitting, sipping wine, and an opportunity to talk about Slow Food, kick around ideas for events, get previews of upcoming attractions, that sort of thing. Or, hell, talk about streetcars, if that's what people want to do please God no.

Bear.. this sounds great. You may also want to post in the Happy Hour thread tomrrow, as it sounds like a more informal event anyway.
I also like the idea of a NYT jurno interviewing osulew and blammo for an article on how "Slow Foods USA is elitist"

Hey there Coyote!
I have no problems with Slow Foods.
We got pretty messed up at Comfest and it took me 45 minutes to eat my fishboat. It doesn't get much slower than that ;)

Kind of impressive, what the commenters think Slow Food can accomplish. Bring better and fresher food into all areas of the country, not just the more affluent ones -- and do it without making the food cost more. Don't get me wrong, I'd be all for that if I could figure out a way to make it happen. Not to mention, Slow Food USA's budget and organizational capacity would have to be orders of magnitude larger even to put a dent in that one issue alone.
A common problem in politics -- constituencies often don't feel constrained by the need to demand results that are actually possible. :? sigh

I don't see anythink elitist about Slow Food. Well, maybe just semantically, the word "convivium" and its Latin plural "convivia" turns off some of the more salt of the earth types.

They'll be "chapters" soon enough.
I'll kind of miss "convivium." Aside from the historical reference (which is actually very anti-elitist -- convivia were feasts where people from all different strata of Roman society came together at the same table), it has connotations of conviviality that I like. But you're right, for a lot of people it doesn't sit well.

Oh, I love the etymology of that word - it's nearly perfect. Conversely, I'm also glad it's not changing to "potlucks" or "chow circles."

I hadn't thought of either of those. Thanks for brightening my day.
We tried to take on elitism and a few other issues on our FAQ page (here). Looking it over now, in the context of the NYT comments, I'm realizing that the point about really inexpensive food being bad for you (and hence more costly) in the long run just doesn't seem to have a whole lot of traction, and that working in something on lower-cost good food options might be more appealing. Something to keep in mind for the next iteration....

I think one of the best political things a group like Slow Food could work on would be to talk about how the subsidization of crops like wheat, corn, sugar, soybeans and rice but not fruits and vegetables is an unhealthy, unbalanced way to run a nation's food system.
