EA is crapping the bed with their online-connection required DRM, and also requiring you to purchase it exclusively through their lame Origin service.
I may pass.

A lot of us agree with you. As much as I love the Simcity franchise, this is a far overreach and I'll be passing on this one.
That always online stuff is crap. Did you know that there are areas in Franklin County (possibly areas even within the Columbus city limits) that don't have access to high-speed internet? Hell, if my roommate wasn't in grad school we probably wouldn't even have internet at home -- we didn't before he started. I am not going to spend $50 a month just to play a one-player game.
Did anyone every make a Sim City 3 or 4 map of Columbus? I tried once,I was loosing money and getting yelled at by Advisers (from the game). I knew you could download the pre-built maps but I never thought they were any good. I'll be exited to see if I can build Columbus in Simcity 2013 without bankrupting my city. :(
If you go to their site, you can sign up to be a "BETA" tester. However after filing out the questionnaire I doubt I'll be one, seeing that 10 years ago life consisted of high school and girls and now I work 40+ hours a week/programing on the side. No time for SimCity 2013 :(
The one mode of transit I don't see available is highways...does that seem right?
BJones, I share your concern that I won't have sufficient time for playing this new iteration of SimCity. I'll just have to cut out sleep. ;)

Any city built in a mostly post-war style such as Columbus is going to get you in deep trouble in SimCity games of the past. No rail transit whatsoever alone kills you on the pollution side.
I'm sure I made Columbus maps in past games.
One of my favorite things to do with Sim City 4 was to take a new random map and draw a couple of narrow little country roads through it first that had some intersections. Wherever the roads intersected in the middle of my map became my little "crossroads" town that would start with just a few little tiny commercial buildings and individual houses. The rest would be filled with woods/forest or cornfields and farms. I'd grow the development one little piece at a time, making a lot of haphazard streets and buildings so that as it grew from town to city to metropolis there were problems that felt "historic" and it gave me pause about just demolishing everything and building a perfect grid pattern. Sort of building a story to go along with the city.
Ah... good times... ;)
^^ My God that would be awesome.
Freakin' glaciers ruining our pristine views.
I suppose it shouldn't really come as a surprise that folks that are passionate about city planning would enjoy the SimCity games.
Just as I suppose there are some people who will say they could play the games so much better, without ever actually opening the program.

Sweeeeet. I may have to add that to my list, though I've got such a stable of games right now (and I have many games that I only get bored with very, very slowly) that it may be a while before I feel any real need to add to the collection.
P.S. I wonder what that little Tesla-coil looking thing in the center foreground is.

I like the radial pods. I'd like to see how a network of pods with commercial districts in their center would work.
I signed up for the beta and was disappointed to learn that its PC only. Will have to wait for the official release. :(
