I know this could go in the Video Games thread, but I think its appropriate in this area because its an urban/city building game.
Is anyone currently playing this or have experience? I played it alot two summers ago when I was in Mexico, but I gave it to my cousin there since any of the computers I had access to in the USA were to weak to handle the game. So I have not played it in two years. But now I ordered it and am waiting for it in the mail since I think I have access to a computer that is powerful enough for it. It comes with the Rush Hour transportation expansion pack too. I am so excited to play this again!!!!
Anybody share my feelings?
I love Sim City. all of them.

Haven't played Sim City in quite awhile... so the current version is a lot of fun then?
Cyclist - did they ever use the game in any of your classes? Or was it considered far too simplistic/fantastical to be of educational value?

In City Regional Planning we used Sim City for a Jennifer Evans Cowley class circa 2002.
I think the point was to use smart growth principles in the design of your city.

My computer isn't strong enough to play anything released later than 2002. Maybe 2003.
I can clean up at Civilization II or Master of Orion II, though!

Sim City 4 is a blast, but it's not the current version came out in 2003, but still needs a decent computer to run well.
Sim City Societies is the latest version, but I think they deviated a bit too much from the original concept of the game. I've not played it yet, and probably won't get around to that one anytime soon.
But yeah... Sim City Four sucked up quite a bit of my life a few years ago. The Rush Hour expansion is essential.

I still break out this game from time to time, and it never really gets old, especially with all the junk you can do with terraforming and the Rush Hour stuff.
I'm also eagerly anticipating Spore. Will Wright is a genius.

I am a nerd. I have The Sims 2 w/all expansions...
I also have Sim City 4 w/Rush Hour...
And now I am playing the new Sim City Societies!
I sort of like societies but its quite different... so whether you like it or not will just depend on you! I guess I would say its a cross between Sim City & Rollercoaster Tycoon or Stronghold, where you have to focus more on the happiness of your people and make sure all of your levels are balanced before you can continue.
You now have buildings that have different societal values like creativity, spirituality, and productivity. Some of these buildings have positive values and some are negative. Even the homes have values. So, if you have a bar, it has negative productivity. People go in and come out drunk - productivity goes down - people get sick & puke and then don't go to work the next day. They also have venues... venues help keep your Sims happy. If you don't have venues for them to release stress then they can get pissed off, skip work, & go on a rampage. Then you have to sic the fuzz on them to give them a beat down. LOL. That part is fun.
You can also have different types of cities w/different types of buildings. You can have Small Town, Futuristic, or a Big Brother type of Police town.
I like it as I think there is more that needs controlling & i'm a control freak... :) While it is a little more cartooney, its a little bit more challenging imo.

my computer also is not good enough for simcity 4, i could only play up to a population of about 100,000, then the computer would just freeze up. the only thing i didn't like about the game was the fact that you had to keep getting in and out of regions in order to build other cities, because if you didn't, the success of your main city would be hindered. i realize this is important in real life but it sucks to play the game that way. i just wish the map was so big that you could build cities without opening and closing regions. oh, yea, they need more variety of buildings also. simcity 3 was the shit but their maps weren't big enough.

Yeah, SC3 was really good. Pretty too. I am still waiting to get SC4 in the mail... I will let you know my progress.
No we never used SC games in my Urban Geography classes. It is too simplistic really, and relies on autocentric models of development and sustainability. This game does suck hours from your life... but thats OK since I just quit smoking and eating cheeseburgers.

Yes, but in real life, one person doesn't have to manage an entire metro area himself. You can't be mayor of both Columbus and Pickerington.

Really? I always thought SimCity was pro-rail transit development. It's always been the better form of transportation in every one of the games in the series.
There are tons of new modes of transportation in SC4. Man, you're making me want to play it again. :?

I am so totally addicted to this game and have been since the first sim city. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I play this thing just about every day. One thing I'v enoticed, maybe I'm teh only one, but the sound effects when you destroy a city sound like ghostly screams.
I was so excited to see a geeky simcity thread, I think Ima boot it up right now...
