More about Little Dog Laughed, opens Thursday night!
Short North Stage will present the The Little Dog Laughed, a behind-the-scenes look at the pursuit of happiness in Hollywood, from November 8 through the 25rd in The Green Room at the historic Garden Theater in the Short North. The play, which won a Tony award in 2007 for its leading lady, Julie White, and was nominated for a Tony for the Best Play, takes a look at a rapacious but hilarious Hollywood agent and a trio of strange bedfellows in search of what they really want. The cast of professional Equity actors will be directed by Columbus theater veteran Jonathan Putnam who performed for many years with CATCO. This is Putnam’s directing debut with Short North Stage.

“This is such a well-written play with humor, frankness and plot turns that never let the audience get ahead of the story,” says Putnam. “And the Green Room at the Garden is such a wonderfully intimate and versatile space for staging a play. The audience feels integrated into the action.”

While the name of the play sounds like a nursery rhyme, the show is actually very explicit and the script calls for both leading men to do brief nude scenes. This is a first for Short North Stage, and will present some interesting challenges, especially in the intimate environment of The Green Room.

“It’s part of the play, and our audiences are certainly sophisticated enough not to be shocked,” says executive producer Rick Gore. “They loved The Irish Curse last March, which dealt quite hilariously with a certain male body part. But we will respect the actors’ comfort zones with appropriate lighting and staging.”

    The Cast includes:

    · New York actor Matt Bailey, most recently off of the national tour of Jersey Boys, as Mitchell, the movie star.

    · Columbus native Lindsay Marlin, a voice-over artist and speech therapist who recently returned here from Phoenix part-time.

    · New York actor and Columbus native, Alex Kip, as Alex, a sexually ambivalent New York hustler.

    · Maya Sayre, last seen as Suzy in The Marvelous Wonderettes at Short North Stage, as Ellen, Alex’s downtown girlfriend.

Among a cast of interesting actors, Alex Kip stands out as someone who has overcome more than his share of challenges. After graduating from Gahanna Lincoln High School, Kip went on to study musical theater at the University of Michigan. But during his senior year, he he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and lost his voice.

“As I struggled with the reality of no longer being able to sing, I learned to write instead. I found my “other voice”, if you will,” says Kip. “Coming home to Columbus to perform is something very near and dear to me.”

During his battle with cancer, Kip wrote a play which was which had a special performance night for Pelotonia (a Columbus based annual cycling event for cancer research), called My Other Voice, about this creative process and his journey of recovery. Now in remission he has since resumed his performing career and development of My Other Voice in New York City.
