I agree. This isn't just a panhandler. This is a potentially dangerous person behaving aggressively and threatening you at your home. How many of us have loved ones and pets that we live with and must protect? Imagine being in a situation where someone like that knows where you live and has threatened you. That can be a very dangerous situation.

That can be a very dangerous situation.
I agree And will add that I realize the police must be notified and I would do so. However if that fellow showed up at my door after he threatens me. I would most likely call the cops, if he did anything physically aggressive he would be eating a bat. If you are on my porch and get aggressive it's on I got a little boy to watch over I would handle that situation (ala:a beating) someone before I let that situation near him.

I would never, ever become physically violent with someone unless it was in self-defense. Tim would be just the guy to push it too far. In particular, he has regularly haunted several places I've worked at, and knows me by now. I am just scared shitless of him, and also feel really sad for him.
The few times the cops have responded to my call, he settles down and they tell him to just run along, or what have you.
I see him ALL the time and he freaks me the fuck out. But he is the only homeless (? who knows?) person I've ever had trouble with.

It's not legally self defense to attack someone on your porch. That's why you have a front door with a lock on it.
If someone is breaching the door then, by all means... open fire.
Just call the cops. If he comes back call the cops again. If the cops have to come back twice they're gonna take him to netcare or county lockup.
Speaking of cops: I heard something beautiful last night. Plainclothes surveillance totally red-handed busted some dudes breaking into a house on 11th ave. The idiots didn't stand a chance.

Oh, and as far as being a tough boy. I've never been in a fist fight in my life. But just the thought of some thug hitting me up for money on my porch, then threatening me because I say no.....I don't know if I'd be able to refrain from knocking him on his ass or not.

If you actually go OUT your door to confront someone that is on your porch then you are liable to get arrested yourself. The castle doctrine does not extend to protecting your lawn chairs.
You can't shoot someone breaking into your car either.

Actually, if someone is on your private property acting in a threatening manner who may or may not be mentally ill...I'd personally recommend avoiding the traditional activist ways such as sit in protests or painting a sign.
Bringing a physical deterrent to someone threatening your life, health, property and premises is hardly thuggery...unless you're confused, and mean the guy who came onto his property was the thug.

I generally don't open the door for strangers anyway though. I've always been one to hide from salesmen, Jehovahs, Mormons, etc.

btw, while not suggesting shooting anyone, I dont' think Matthew was either, and if I'm not mistaken...a trespasser who is aggressive and threatening violence on your yard can pretty much be beaten at will without you catching a case.
p.s. Speaking for myself, an aggressive panhandler in my yard, I'll catch a case anyway.

Oh yeah. I totally agree with you there then.
Ideally, I think you should be able to go beat the snot out of someone who is messing with your stuff, but legally, you gotta draw a line at the door. And really, crazy methed up drunks can be tough opponents.

Well, I'd take my chances. Maybe the difference is a 9-1-1 call first, THEN the beating (I think that's the way it played out in the personal instance I'm thinking of). So, you basically file the verbal complaint of "this maniac is on my lawn threatening me"...THEN beat his ass...then the cops show up, you're good to go. Trust me, this is by no means legal advice, it just was what worked for me :lol:

If you could get away to make the call -- then why would you return to the threatening situation? That would probably NOT be reasonable, even if a cop or jury would let it slide...
Like I said, tho, most of the panhandlers really aren't a problem (maybe a little mouthy sometimes, so what?).
This one guy is an issue. May have a mental problem. Glad I have large dogs that bark when the house is approached -- altho, that doesn't help when I don't have them on the street. Hope he (Tim) eventually relocates. That one is tricky. I still think remaining off this guy's radar as much as possible (*do not engage*) is best, and then call the cops when needed. I don't know that beating a crazy person changes their behavior. The person isn't reacting normally to situations anyway, so it's hard to say what, if any, effect a beating would have. And, if you hurt a crazy person badly, could you live with that?

I'm not familiar with his name, it could be Tim for all I know, but a few months ago a really aggressive beggar was hanging around the North Side branch of the Library, where he tried to hit me up for cash, and was much more aggressive than other beggars. Then he wouldn't let my girl friend out of her car one day when she came home from work, and followed her to the front door. I told him to leave and shut the door in his face, then he came back a few days latter, and she was at work; I told him not to come around again. I haven't seen him since.
I saw him for a while "living" or at least hanging out a lot around the 70 McMillen building, the same building that Charlie W. Myers, was arrested in.

We live in a building just a few doors down, and just in the past month, since mid December, McMillen has been made impassible by Swat twice. Once when our neighbor wigged out and threatened to kill himself, and the second when Myers was arrested. The building we live in is decent, though we have some noisy undergrads above us, most of the residence are grad students/med students/law students, and a few working singles and couples. However we are flanked on both sides by crazies. The building next door is like a 24/7 Jerry Springer show.
Just last week, when going to work in the morning we were greeted by a rifle carrying cop telling us to go back inside, they were checking in on one of the neighbors. We moved to Columbus about a year and a half ago, we chose the area because it boarders the SN, VV and Campus. We love the area, but the crime and the crazies are getting more violent. Last year the worse thing that went down were a few car thefts from the parking lot (mostly for parts), this year has been much more disquieting. We are planning on staying, moving to the north side of the VV area soon, we are hoping the area quickly improves.
