^ My car was broken into twice in the short north and I never even got to speak to an officer.
Just an automated system of button pushing. I missed my home town (Bryan, Oh) where they'd send 4 cop cars and a chopper if there was a car break-in. Bigger fish to fry here in Cbus and while frustrating at the time, I can understand that.
As mentioned above, your best bet is to leave absolutely no reason to break in.
That said, I agree with joev that these people are serious pieces of shit for breaking into people's cars and it's really not excusable. However it is part of downtown living, no matter what neighborhood you're in.

When we lived on North Campus (now called Olde Northe Columbuse, or Washington Beach, or whatever) people broke into my wife's car three times. Cops wouldn't do anything. Someone hit-and-ran my car and the cops didn't even come out until the next day for that one.
Rentals in UA are about the same price as GV, short north, Clintonville, etc. but the crime here is almost zero - after the rash of petty theft/property crime we experienced in the city it's amazing to have absolutely nothing spray-painted, stolen, broken, opened, etc. The cops here are so bored that if anything DOES happen, they're on it immediately. Couple years back there was a police report for a lady finding a piece of metal in the street. The cops went out and actually checked out the piece of metal. Bored cops are hell on teenagers but once you're an adult they are kinda awesome.

Have any of you looked at theColumbus crime reports page? there are literally hundreds of car break-ins in Columbus every month. In my condo complex alone we have had 5 break-ins in the last month. Now I agree that not leaving anything in your car is a best practice for avoiding having your car broken into. My only error was having a suction cup ring residue circle on my windshield from a GPS. That and a broken window and a few dents to the car body left me with nearly a grand in repair bills. Fortunately I am insured.
I totally agree with one of the previous posters about the risk reward being so high that there is almost nothing to stop car break ins. When you are willing to cause 1k in damage for a 2 year old GPS unit that you probably pawn for $25, there is something wrong with the penalty for getting caught.
I also was frustrated with the police not being interested unless the damage was 3k. If you multiply the average repair cost for a broken window x the number of instances, we are talking Hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in damages. Not to mention the loss of property value that is associated with knowing that people are bold enough to smash car windows so close to your home. I also doubt that the $25 from my GPS that was pawned went to buying bread, and fueling drug habits magnifies the problem even further.
It seems to me that what seems to be a lot of little break ins becomes a rather large tax on society through all the repercussions of which I have only scratched the surface of.

While it's best not to tempt them with valuables on display, some people will take anything. In 2002, when I was living in Cleveland, someone smashed the sunroof of my (unlocked) car and stole a bag of old clothes and a 13 year-old Sega Genesis that I was planning to take to Goodwill.

I had my car broken into twice in German Village. Once they tried to steal my beat-up, 10+ year-old minivan.
The cops didn't come out either time. But so what? I didn't need them to come out, get out of their cars, walk over to my car & say, "Yup, that's a car break-in, all right".
Face it - there's nothing the cops can do after the fact. Pipe dreams that they will somehow look for DNA evidence, launch an investigation, call out the dogs, etc are just that - pipe dreams.

My wife just had her car broken into. There was nothing of value, so they stole some change (total < $1), a cell phone charger and an ipod charger. WTF kind of low life steals a cell phone charger?!?! Reminds me of college when we used to steal our friend's TV remotes just to mess with them. So people of Vic Village.. please be on the watch out for a man selling a used blackberry phone charger.

I had almost the exact same thing happen to me a few years ago. I think they assume seeing the charger in the car means that the phone or iPod is in the glove box.

It's one of the biggest annoyances ever to blame the victim for the crime. Anyone remember when Michael Jordan's dad was murdered for sleeping in his Lexus on an off ramp (or somewhere like that)? His murderers said something similar, like, that's what you get when you sleep in your Lexus on the side of the road. Just sayin.
I wouldn't hold out much hope for the Credence tapes though.

You can both blame the criminal for committing the crime and point out that doing something stupid in a certain environment will contribute to the odds of you being a victim. They aren't mutually exclusive.
Leaving bags or laptops or cords for electronics or anything else in a car in the city is a bad move that will increase your odds of coming back to a broken window. Empty it out, leave it unlocked, and at worst you may come back to an open glove box that someone rooted through.
