Everyone around my neighborhood have been getting pissed about all the car break ins as of late. One person took to some civilian justice and setup a camera and caught a guy in the act and posted it to youtube. Now he is plastering the thief's face all around town and trying to raise awareness.

I also think more people have been really lazy lately about what they leave in plain sight in their cars. If you don't want your car broken into, don't tempt them.
I was just noticing the other day that there seems to be an increasing amount of broken car window glass in the few blocks surrounding my house :(

Anywho - the info with the video states it was the W 5th Ave area, west of North High... and that the bag in the video was full of dirty men's underwear. Take that as you will.
I have nothing but crap in my car, and leave the door unlocked. I'd much rather have someone rifle through, than break the window. If they want my 1997 Atlas, box of tissues, 89 cent window scraper or container of bungee cords, they are welcome to them.

+1 - you gotta be smarter than leaving your shit in plain view. a backpack sitting in a car in plain view is a welcome mat.

Yeah, like it or not, a thief of opportunity is going to look for anything that might be of value. The best bet is remove that from their sight.
On the other hand it's good to get rid of the thieves too. I'd say they're going to need a better camera though.

I used to live in the Short North right on High Street (this was about 7 years ago)...NEVER leave anything in your car. Leave the doors unlocked, clear out your glove box and leave that open, too. I never had shit stolen or my windows broken out...just be smart.
Also, don't leave big rocks by your car. Duh.

When my empty car was broken into in the Short North (because I was parked next to a nicer car which also didn't have anything in it--fuck you coremodels and nakedredhead), I was all excited because the thief had left the window-breaking chisel in the car--probably with latent fingerprints and DNA on it!!
The bored-sounding dispatcher, however, told me that I should just throw it away or keep it, whatever, and that police were never dispatched to investigate car break-ins. Especially when the only items stolen were my ashtray and a ruined Blues Traveler tape.
So basically what I'm saying is that breaking into a car is the perfect crime because nobody at CPD seems to give a shit CPD doesn't have the manpower to investigate. I don't know how much an ashtray and a Blues Traveler tape are worth (FYI car windows will set you back at least $100 if you're insured), but since there's literally no risk of being caught, the risk-reward ratio comes out to something like infinity dollars.
Oh and by the way--I later used the chisel to cut out the throat of a random co-ed up near Cazuela's. Hopefully my car thief was arrested for that.
