I had started a similar thread a week ago but it's no longer up. I've looked everywhere????? Anyways, let's try this again.
Did anyone attend the IV meeting with the hotel presentation on Tuesday. I'm curious as to what they presented; renderings, height comparisons, site layouts, etc. Also, if you did attend, any thoughts on the mood of the commission members or other attendees.

I believe it got bumped up to the front page here as your name is listed as the contributor. One of the downsides of the front page articles is they don't see much action after they get bumped down after a couple of days. Wish they were integrated into the messageboard so they would be easier to follow and update.
Anyway, I'll second for any updates about the hotel :)

I went to the meeting on Tuesday. It was pretty uneventful, just the developer trying to gain some insight into how to best produce a project that will be more likely to get approved. One interesting point that was made was that too much attention is being paid to number of stories over height. The Ibiza was mentioned as a comparison. I don't know what the actual height of that development is (was) going to be, but the assumption was the ceiling height was so tall in the Ibiza that less stories may equate to a taller structure.
There will be a combined meeting of the Italian Village and Victorian Village commissions in the near future as this project is now a hotel on the east side of High and parking garage with retail and gallery on the west.
I think the crux of the argument right now is how the project blends into the skyline. I, personally, feel like with the new Hilton, Hyatt, proximity to downtown and Bollinger it isn't a big deal but understand the commissions being apprehensive to slowly chipping away those boundaries. They have done a lot of work to make the Short North distinctive and want to protect what makes us special.

I knew the height would be the main issue with them. Hopefully, it isn't scaled down significantly. I can't tell you how much I want this to happen....all 15 stories of it. The thing is if they still want the same amount of rooms the building will have to be wider instead of taller. There's no more room for that. Or they could shrink the rooms, which would take away from the overall quality and experience. I guess I don't get the ceiling height vs. # of stories issue. If there are fewer stories, then there are fewer rooms. Why would they not want as many hotel rooms as possible. The more visitors the better for Short North businesses. It's more feet on the street.

Same here. We need more density on High, not less.

yea. that's what the city needs... a *6th* design review commission.
Sorry... I don't mean to be super sarcastic, but I am absolutely sure that putting *another* commission in play in the Short North would not help matters. I strongly believe that all the commissions should be folded into one citywide historic architectural commission... frankly it should be under the governance of the Historic Resources Commission. It would address numerous problems: it would eliminate a lot of the inconsistency between different areas of the city, would eliminate a lot of the accusations of favoritism that occur, and if done correctly, with appropriate levels of city staff available, could ultimately streamline the process very much.

I don't think it should be a historic commission. It seems VV and IV commissions do OK looking out for their respective neighborhoods but a SN commission could focus on the commercial coridor.

Oh right. Get rid of that pesky historic designation so that we can tear down those small old buildings...
and construct the South Campus Gateway South.
It'll be a huge hit as a small business incubator. Maybe we'll even get a new parking deck out of the deal.
