I work in that neighborhood(The Garden) and am also VERY interested in what is going on there. I heard somthing about a drug store possiably??
It would have been a GREAT place for a parking garage, especially with the old garden theater going condo.
Anyone else know anything about that(garden theater?)?

I think the general sentiment is that parking structures should be set back from High, not right up against it; more people want them than not (and even more actually need them even if they only admit it grudgingly, if at all), but High St. frontage is just too important to the redevelopment of the corridor to be broken up with parking garages. They create dead sidewalk in front of them.
On the other hand, AFAIK, there's no urban commercial overlay or other binding planning document (pretty sure the Campus Partners plan doesn't count) for that stretch of High, so maybe one could come in. Doesn't mean it's a good idea, though, in either case. That site needs to be a revenue-generator, and parking garages, while necessary to other (more lucrative) businesses nearby, as well as residences, don't really produce a whole lot in dollar-per-square-foot terms.

Please God, don't let another spawn of Walgreens/CVS land there.
Last time I talked to one of the local insurance companies, condos were slated for that site.

As long as we're making a wish list, please add a nice gym to it.

Anybody know of any updates on this travesty of a corner? I would be happy with ANYTHING here at this point.

I would have agreed, but there are already enough existing spaces for more variety of retail, although I concede that the corner here is an eyesore. Surely a temporary fix could spruce it up a bit. Park anyone? The Short North already has enough infill in it's current state and has a huge driving problem (too many people wanting to drive, not enough parking spaces, of which I'm surprised that this lot isn't after all this time). Can we get some more development not on High St? There are already some quality businesses that are committed to improving their neighborhoods on Long, Parsons, and Cleveland. Why not try to spur more of that?

Since there's already a bunch of unused retail space in that area, I would like to see the NE corner of 5th/High expand on its present role as a vacant lot & act as a farmers market/flea market by day/weekends & clear out & be a parking lot for local businesses in the evenings.
This of course would be utterly unprofitable for the property's owner, but might make shopping/parking an easier proposition for the present retail locations. It's kind of used for this already (I've seen guys selling bonsai trees and even people drag a grill out there & sell burgers during gallery hop) but it would be cool to give it the go-ahead for vendors to have at it & set up shop.

Say NO to vacant lots. If I were a developer, this lot would be a no brainer. Must be expensive or contaminated or both. There was a gas station there.

Well…I'm not sure what it being a "no brainer" entails, obviously people must have given it some thought & taken a pass on it. It's going to be a vacant lot for awhile until someone bites, no way around it. Might as well make it a kick-ass vacant lot that adds some value to the community in the meantime.
