I am curious about the burgeoning N Campus Shi-Sha bar scene. It doesnt seem to match the demand for said places. From my observations, there is now Cafe Sahara (Arcadia & High), _____________ (Duncan & High), Shi-Sha Lounge (the first in CBus, ~Patterson & High), Leen'O Cafe (Hudson & Summit).
More lounges than grocery stores, gas stations, pizza joints, etc. Explain...

When I've been in a few of the places they've been pretty full. And if I am not mistaken they are pretty much the only establishment around at the moment where one can legally smoke indoors. Combine that with college kids and a nice long midwest winter...

True, true. I've been meaning to venture into Cafe Sahara as it's on my ride home from work. The beaded curtain entrance is slightly intimidating... or is that my classic, ingrained stereotyping seeming though my skin? Could become a new study spot!

Cafe Sahara is a new one. The one off Duncan and High is Buckeye ShiSha.
There's also Cleopatra (dingy interior) at 8th / High, Midnight Hookah south of Mt Pleasant and E 5th (100% Arab clientele, until you walk in), 1001 Nights and Gypsy Cafe in the Short North.

It's actually a great place for college kids under 21 to hang out, chat, do work, etc since bars are off-limits.

I said for college students under 21, and used the term "off limits" loosely. I realize there are some bars underage people can enter.
Since they can't sit up to a bar and order a beer, at least they can sit down in a shi-sha lounge and order a hookah and enjoy it with a few friends.

I wonder if the recent rise of the hookah bar can be contributed to the smoking ban's effect on regular bars. That doesn't really explain the campus concentration though. Unless the students are just attracted to the "vice" angle of it now that smoking has been made that much more of a taboo.

Speaking of hookah cafes near college campuses I don't think its something unique to columbus. I've ventured to colleges in new mexico, texas, illinois, and california where i've smoked hookah at cafes near the campus. Some of those are so well established that there are covers and reservation only situations.
I think I am going to open a hookah bar in puerto rico. Anyone know if puertorrikenyos like to smoke?

For those who are looking for the crowd that is not underage and drunk cafe sahara is the place. I felt like i was lost in egypt for two hours. The music was nice and the whole atmosphere was authentic, as far as I can tell. The arabic coffee was delicious. For two people we got one hooka and two coffees, 16 total + 2 tip.

Anyone know what Cafe Sahara's hours are? I've been looking for an authentic place nearby, since Leen'O is no longer within walking distance and I refuse to go to Shisha. And do they serve Middle Eastern food or is it just a hookah and coffee type place?
