Shawn, the manager at A Touch of Earth in bicycle accident, you can help!

Many of you may have heard about this but I wanted to share. I only knew Shawn as the nice man that made me lattes at the North Market but he has been in my thoughts and I check the website to see how he is progressing.

Shawn, the manager at A Touch of Earth (the coffee shop at the North Market) was riding his bike a few weeks ago and was "doored" (a motorist opened their car door in front of him). He sustained some serious injuries and is currently in an induced coma in ICU.

Wear your helmet whe you ride a bicycle. Look out for bicycles when you are in your car.
Shawn appears to have stopped getting worse. Bicyclists are relatively strong and healthy. If anybody can come back from this trauma, a cyclist like Shawn can. He truly wants the world to get better and he knows he still has work to do...
I bet he's dreaming about Hawaii.

I think we'll go over to Como on Saturday morning and help out. We have some seed potatos left over we can bring and plenty of tools and man power.

He's the coffee guy at the North Market. Jeez, I hope he recovers with flying colors. By the looks of the photos alone, he must have a lot of people pulling for him, but the more the better.

Shawn was running a routine errand to the bank from his job as the manager of A Touch of Earth in the North Market.

I don't mean to make trouble for the owner, but if the above is correct, Shawn ought to be able to assert a Worker's Comp claim.

Thanks J, after reading this I am going to get me helmet today.
I always found and excuse not to wear one, too hot, bad hair day etc. But no more this has scared the crap out of me.

If Shawn's accident saves one life (Porky), we are moving in the right direction.
The owner of the coffee shop and Shawn are like family. She is going WAY further than any insurance company could. She is affected by this more than any of us could comprehend. She needs as much of our support as we are capable of providing.

If you are, in part, responding to me, your response is somewhat irrational. Workers Comp is set up to compensate any worker who is injured while carrying out a duty for an employer. I guarantee you that the State of Ohio has more resources to reimburse hospital expenses than the owner of Touch of Earth. If Shawn's best care is to be secured, it would be far better to have OBWC pick up the tab than some personal guarantee. In a perfect world, the quality of healthcare would not be dependent upon likelihood of payment. We don't live in a perfect world. Hospital staff and doctors make budgetary decisions about diagnostics, hospital stay, therapy, treatment protocols, you name it, based in part upon payment source.

I am not sure of the particulars for this claim, but workers compensation is set up to protect both businesses and workers. Hopefully all available resources will be used to help Shawn.

Yes, the worker's comp will be there, but the care and love that Ann (and many of his friends) is providing is an intangible that is priceless. She will be there for him as will her business insurance. Anybody that knows her knows her as the incredibly giving, motherly person she is.

The horrible thing (aside from the whole injury thing) about this is even with all of the resources available he will probably still be on the hook for thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. Shawn will probably need rehab and from my personal experience no insurance policy pays for enough physical therapy. Patients always seem to need way more than insurers are willing to approve and pay for. OBWC is better than most but both you and your PT people have to really know how to work the system.

Rode to work a couple of weeks ago and watched three bikers run read lights, two of them were without helmets.

Wear your helmets, obey the laws, and keep Shawn in your prayers.

Good to hear and glad to see this changing some minds (@ Porky). That said, and without derailing this too far, if you want to take up a cause in the wake of this do so for what is really the issue in an incident like this.

It's not the helmet, it's the lack of humanity, kindness and respect-the complete selfishness-of our everyday lives and how we interact with the world around us. If you're going to champion anything, champion the simple act of taking an extra 30 seconds, being that much more patient in your actions. It very well could have meant a world of difference here if the driver simply took an extra 30 seconds to recheck the mirrors and ensure there was no traffic.

And it's not a car vs. bike thing. Everyone should be doing this. Cyclists take an extra few seconds and consider the weight of your actions before you blow a streetlight or dart off a sidewalk. Same with pedestrians.
