Looking forward to this Sunday night. I don't want to say a month from now, "Why didn't I go see Woodstock?"
The musical clips I watched were really, really good.
See you there, jmak.

I went back and saw this a second time. Yes, I enjoyed it that much. There were things I'd either missed or had forgotten to mention. Migod, the Santana cover that open the first act is insane and intense, with lush choreography to match.
There are also great nods to Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie and Joan Baez. I saw Joan Baez at the Amnesty International tour in 1988. Stacie Boord nailed her sound.
Now I need to pick up the soundtrack. I've had Noelle Grandison's version of "For Yasgur's Farm" in my head for days.

Cat,
it was great seeing you as well as Patient Zero a few weeks earlier. The interest and feedback in this show have been incredible. There is serious talk of keeping it rolling past March - but get in here to see it just in case. :)

I'm not saying that to be nice or because you are you're one of the nicest guys I've ever met, I'm saying that because it was Earth movingly good. Your Crosby Stills Nash and Young rendition of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, enhanced by an amazing visual performance was so good I had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. It was that good. And Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help From My Friends" was another powerful song for me as well.
The Shadowbox team has worked so hard to ensure that we are treated to not just a great show, but also to an unforgettable experience. Everyone gave 110%, regardless of their role: actor, director, writer, server, set designer - many overlapping their roles that night. If anyone is on the fence about whether or not they buy a ticket for a Sunday performance, I would hope they would give them a chance to let them pamper you, and mesmerize you for a few hours.
Cat, the CD is worth every penny and then some. I'm playing it [again] as I'm on CU. My only critique is that it lacks an internal and external play list with credits. A label on the back would be a simple fix, and I imagine an internal play list would be simple for the computer savvy. Great soundtrack, for sure!
I've been talking to several people about this show and spreading the word. I wish Shadowbox continued success with this show so more people get to experience it like I had.

PZ, good call and I'll let our sound guy who puts those together know your thoughts. For your info (and anyone else who may care) here's the soundtrack. Of course, in our show all the songs are performed by the Shadowbox cast, but thought you may want to know the original artists:

Spinning Wheel - Blood, Sweat and Tears
Freedom - Richie Havens
Darlin' Be Home Soon - John Sebastian
Coming into Los Angeles - Arlo Guthrie
For Yasgur's Farm - Mountain

Suite Judy Blue Eyes - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Soul Sacrifice - Santana
My Generation - The Who
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
Feelin Alright - Joe Cocker
Piece of My Heart - Janis Joplin
Fixin' to Die Rag - Country Joe McDonald
With a Little Help From My Friends- Joe Cocker
Star Spangled Banner- Jimi Hendrix

Any chance you could put the videos from the show online sometime? They were some of the best work d2thawhitey has put out there. Powerful stuff.

For now you can check out our rendition of "with a little help from my friends." (not nearly as powerful on youtube as it is live, but will still give you an idea)

Also happy to announce that due to its popularity, we're extending the show past its original end date of March 28th! If you haven't seen it yet, you're really missing out. And I'm not just saying that because I wrote it and am in it ... OK, maybe I am, but still. ;)

I meant the "interviews" interspersed throughout the show, but migod, THANK YOU for this clip!

Original Woodstock performer Country Joe McDonald is playing a mini-concert with our band after the 7:00 show Sunday night (3/28)! We're close to selling out, so if you're interested, make reservations soon!
Also, due to the success of this show we are extending it (yet again) through the end of May.
There are some wonderful things happening with this musical. I'll keep you all posted as they begin to unfold.

A & I went to see the show last night after being personally invited by jmak and --predictably --loved it! We've both always identified with the hippies (not a surprise, if you know that we named our child "River").
Anyway, if you love the music of that era --and really, who of taste doesn't?-- you owe it to yourself to see this show while it's still playing. The musicians and vocalists are top notch, and the cast really put their all into evoking the spirit of the times. Everyone performing seemed like they were completely enjoying themselves at all times --you couldn't tell this was a show they'd performed several times a week for months. I'd even say that either some members of the chorus got into character with the aid of authentic 60's substances or were very good at faking it!
I also thought Jimmy did a good job of putting together a general structure that alternates between recreations and reinterpretations of these well-known performances, and that gives a good sense of the backstage flavor of the concert while still keeping the focus firmly on the music.
With so many strong performances, it would be hard to single out any, but I especially enjoyed JJ Walker channeling both Arlo Guthrie and Joe Cocker, and also the young guitarist who did a blistering Jimi Hendrix.
The young woman who played Janis didn't quite have the whiskey-drenched Joplin pipes, but I definitely enjoyed her Janis portrayal, and "Piece of My Heart", long a favorite song of mine, was another real show highlight for me. In general, I felt like I gained a new appreciation even for songs I already knew and loved, and even got introduced to a couple of ones I didn't know so well.
So, in summary, go see it, there's really no excuse to miss it!

Did Country Joe McDonald make an appearance?

Chris and April,
It was wonderful to see you guys again and I'm really glad you enjoyed the show. It was fun for me to discover you during the play bopping your heads and mouthing the music. :)
PZ, Country Joe did show up that night (Chris and April were actually at the afternoon show) and played an awesome set with our band. I'll post a link once we get some of the footage online. He also invited our band to play with him in May at Kent State to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the shootings. So it looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
There are also a couple rumors that we may be doing this show outside sometime this summer as well as a possible gig with the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. I'll let you know when those things go beyond the 'rumor' stage.

Went last night and was just blown away. Woodstock occurred just a few months before I was sent across the pond to the land of scorching heat, monsoons, malaria, leeches and the biggest mosquitoes on the planet, not to mention people shooting at you. So the songs and anti-war sentiment were very much a part of my life.
So difficult to pick out a singular performance as they were all excellent, but Steve Guyer certainly nailed Country Joe, and Jimmy Mak channeled Clark Kent for his role. "A Little Help From My Friends" brought the house down. Matt Hahn's consistently superior guitar work cements his place as one of the best local ax men ever. Several other songs brought a tear to my eye and a lump in my throat.
Even though few of the company were even born when Woodstock happened, their performances captured the mood of the times and the passion of their convictions. A couple of minor historical inaccuracies in the accompanying film, but something only a minutiae freak like me would notice.
ShadowBox remains one of the artistic jewels in our town. Look forward to Spring Fling.
On the way out, Steve Guyer did guarantee to me that their production of "Tommy" would be returning!

As I mentioned to you, it's difficult for me not to just rip open my shirt and try to fly at certain moments, but I think it would be a little inappropriate.
It was a pleasure to meet you and I'm really glad you enjoyed the show.
For everyone else, there are only 4 Sundays left! Don't be that person in Columbus who missed it. ;)

Bump.
Only THREE Sundays left to catch the most popular Shadowbox show of all time.
This Sunday we're having a Mother's Day Special - Moms get in for half-priced and get free love beads. 'Cause let's face it - moms wearing love beads are hot!
Hope to see you there. :)

Alright gang, next Sunday is it (at least for awhile ...)
Seats are filling up fast and would love to see some more of you guys there.
Shows are 2:30 and 7:00 (yes, this interferes with the LOST finale, but that's why God made DVR.)
