Those who know me know I'm an unabashed fangirl when it comes to good musical theater, so of COURSE I loved last night's performance of this show! I'll spare you the full blown review style since others do a better job of it than I do. However, a few highlights.
- Jimmy Mak is just as funny and sweet in person as he is on CU. Rockmastermike and I chatted with him when he wasn't on stage. What a nice guy!
- Jimmy is also a great writer, mixing original quotes from the Woodstock stage with his own creations in the audience. He threw in an interesting snogging session for his own character, but it went with the feeling of the moment.
- Best musical performance? Really tough to call since there was no distinct lead. Stephanie Shull's introductory singing of "Woodstock" almost brought me to tears. Jennifer Hahn channeled Janis Joplin gorgeously. The ensemble tossed lead and backing vocals like a champion volleyball team. I came close to jumping on stage during the first act finale and dancing along with them but decided to stay put and finish my drink.
- Don't bring small kids to this production unless you are sure they aren't at the age where they will repeat what they hear. At one point, every other word is "fuck", so that might be a problem at daycare. Also, on a serious note, there is a great deal of strobe light effects during the first act, so epileptics with light sensitivity might have a problem.
- EAT THE BROWNIES! Don't worry about the green leafy stuff in them...
