This district was established a few years ago by residents of the neighborhoods. Neighborhoods, such as Old Oaks, along Livingston Avenue were some of the first streetcar suburbs of the City. So the name is referencing the historical streetcar, not something that is to come. It does not replace neighborhoods, such as Driving Park, but rather incorporates several neighborhoods to create one larger district. Many public meetings were held to get resident feedback on the project and the gateway piece is only a part of the improvements that are happening on the Avenue. Other planned improvements can be viewed at: http://www.neighborhooddesign.org/uploads/1/0/8/2/10823603/phase1_liv.ave.pdf.
I hope artists find this as an opportunity to beautify the neighborhood and welcome people into the district.

I'm sure it's a great project, but I'm not buying the streetcar thing. The whole city had streetcars as early as 1906. I think neighborhood identity and branding should focus on something that makes (or made) a place unique. Calling this the Streetcar District doesn't accomplish that. Also, I don't see why the neighborhoods need to be consolidated into yet another "district."

I propose they build a giant suggestion box for everyone to add their personal opinions of what the neighborhood / district / area should be called! Who knows maybe one of these previous great suggestions might end up as the name that fits!
Honestly a great opportunity for local artists! If I wasn't artistically inept I would have tried to come up with some doodle or napkin sketch...

OOOooooo... I thought of a new idea! What if they turned old streetcars or streetcars sort of cut in half on their sides standing up like they do along route 66 with the cars or like Dublin's ears of corn.. :)

It would only make any sense if it was the ONLY neighborhood to have had streetcar service instead of almost every urban core neighborhood.

Some other new district suggestions:
Franklinton: The Former Devastating Flood District or Lucas Sullivant's Pimp House District
Milo-Grogan: We Have Fast-Food Chicken District
Mount Vernon: No, Not That Mount Vernon District
Devon Triangle: Sorta Like the Bermuda District
South of Main: The Literal District
Southern Orchards: You'll Have to go to Kroger for Fruit District.Posted 10 months ago # -

Kroger is NOT ONLY in Southern Orchards. FACT
Fast Food Chicken is NOT ONLY in Milo-Grogan. FACT
Triangle is used in many district names NOT ONLY Devon Triangle and Bermuda. FACTAny cities or villages with names used previously would also cease to exist as they were not the ONLY places with said names. Apologies to Versailles.
I unfortunately feel that the columbus underground would cease to exist as it is not the ONLY underground. I believe London might have an Underground which is slightly more popular at least over seas.

Join local community residents and streetcar district neighbors in celebrating the successful implementation of the Streetcar District Sculpture, a collaborative project between the Livingston Avenue Area Commission, Streetcar District Neighborhoods, and Neighborhood Design Center! The dedication will occur on Saturday, April 27th at 10:00am at the sculpture site at the NW corner of Livingston Ave. & Nelson Rd. Parking is available at the Driving Park Recreation Center and park (1100 Rhoads Avenue).
This permanent free-standing sculpture serves as the new gateway into The Streetcar District and celebrates the neighborhood history and the people who live there. The sculpture was designed by local artist, John Sunami. Landscaping around the gateway was designed by Combs Landscaping Design and installed through The Harmony Project’s, One Week, One Neighborhood Project.
The NDC in collaboration with LAVA-C and the Streetcar District Neighborhoods received a Chase 200Columbus Neighborhood Grant through the Greater Columbus Arts Council, a Joseph A. Jeffrey Grant through the Columbus Foundation, and a donation through the Norfolk Southern Foundation to make this project possible. Program support was also provided by United Way of Central Ohio.
