I'm going to be sitting down with Jolene Molitoris, Director of ODOT on Thur June 10th to discuss the 70/71 Split Fix and the 3C Rail Corridor.
Looking for some good questions to ask her, if there is anything specific that CU'ers want to know about these two huge projects.

How will ODOT accommodate bikes on the 3C? Looking specifically at a roll on/roll off so you don't have to disassemble the bike to go from Columbus to Cleveland.

great opportunity! Here are a few:
What can Columbus citizens do to further investment in Multi-Modal projects here in Central Ohio?
What opportunities exist for private foundations, corporations, etc to partner with ODOT and other agencies to expedite the planning and construction of critical transit projects?
Can we add (or plan for) light rail lanes to the 70/71 split reconfiguration on the south side of downtown? Think stops at High, Grant, Parsons, Ohio Ave, etc. and connections directly to the high street corridor.

Thanks for the opportunity Walker.
Two issues on the 70/71 project: The design of the non-capped bridge decks will impact around a dozen downtown crossings immeasurably. There are 13 bridge crossings total, and one or two may receive capping. For the non-capped crossings, how wide will the sidewalks be, what are the dimensions for the decks? Will there be Fort Washington Way style plantings and/or nice wide sidewalks on the bridges? Will ODOT use the I-670 style decorative bridge fencing?
The so-called Urban Avenues: These new streets have the potential to ruin parts of downtown if they aren't built correctly. Originally called 'collector-distributors' and rendered as big ugly freeway entrance/exit ramps, they were renamed but not redesigned. Will they be built to Complete Streets standards? Trees between the sidewalk and the curb? A parking lane? Lane widths to accommodate bikes? Streetscape features in compliance with the downtown streetscape standards?

I would really like to see stormwater collection planters (as found on front st in Riversouth) as well as lots of trees. Is this part of the plan for the split?
Unrelated question: Why doesn't Ohio let areas along freeways grow instead of spending huge sums of money mowing? South Carolina only mows a narrow strip by the road and its a much more visually pleasing drive as a result.

This interests me as well. In light of yesterday's tragic deaths on I-70, why doesn't ODOT plant a vegetative buffer to catch crossover cars. In some areas they are stringing cable that accomplishes the same thing but seems to create a mowing headache. Are they more concerned about lawsuits related to their design decisions (ie: A death caused by a tree greater that 4" diameter) as opposed to a car crossing over and hitting oncoming traffic (where liability falls on the driver)? I'm not a lawyer so I don't know that this is true. Are they concerned about wildlife taking up residence in the median? I've driven in South Carolina too - it certainly is aesthetically pleasing.

No, great interview. I jest. I was happy to see that she was aware of the generational change in priorities. I believe that is the strongest argument on why this should be funded.
