City council debates streetcar network
Tuesday, May 6, 2008
By CHARLOTTE STARCKSEATTLE - No planes, trains, or automobiles - streetcars are the transportation proposal of choice in front of a Seattle City Council committee Tuesday.
The Seattle City Council Transportation Committee are debating the feasibility of a citywide streetcar network.
About a thousand people a day ride the South Lake Union Line. Now it seems it may be possible to build streetcar lines connecting neighborhoods with downtown and stadiums to move people around Seattle.
Ever since the streetcar rolled out between South Lake Union and Westlake Center, riders who love it have had one recurring complaint.
"I wish it went further," said one rider. "It's just a small loop now."

A streetcar NETWORK is something I can get behind 100%.

Precisely, the SLUT is tiny and now that it's getting huge ridership, they're going to build more.
I'm pretty proud of Seattle on this one, they fought quality mass transportation for years and years.

well, ridership and the fact that they saw hundreds of millions of dollars in that imaginary development along their streetcar line...

Doesn't look like they're fighting it that hard ...

I guess Columbus should just skip step one and move straight to step two then? ;)

Fun read, btw. This is an anti-Seattle-streetcar blog or editorial making most of the same arguments being made here of why it'll never work, won't spawn development, etc. etc. etc. written prior to the line being built.
Of course, the Seattle streetcar was then an enormous success in development in South Lake Union (exceeded goals) and ridership.

During the past year I've tried my best to be polite when posting about the streetcar, but over the past 2 days I'm def. having trouble doing so. People tend to only hear what they want to. How many more cities are going to pass us up?
Walker, please continue to show the success in other cities, maybe it will wake some people up. In fact, I might mail copies to City Council, esp. Councilwoman Tavares and Councilwoman Tyson (who didn't stay for her own meeting).

Of the articles I posted only one or two are projects moving forward right now. Most of the others are still proposals that have many obstacles in front of them.
I just think it's worth looking into all sorts of similar projects in other cities to get a better understanding of what we're facing here.

True, but several have been expansions of existing lines rather than proposed starter lines. And on the Portland one was confusing ... I know Portland already has a streetcar, but that looked like an article proposing something new (like a new network not connected to the existing one for the moment?). Didn't read it very closely, though.

That's why fought is a past tense word and fighting is a present tense one. :D

I'm excited to see what's been done. It hadn't opened until after I left Seattle (Nov. 2006) and I lived about a half mile from that area prior to that. If they really brought all of those biogenetics companies up into that area, that's huge.

Seattle also got a Federal Block Grant allocated to businesses to offset losses during construction instead of constantly telling them how they wouldn't be hurt by it.

Brilliant plan, how come no businesses from the SN asked for that?

Well, in short, we're working on it.

If CoC got the Fed Grants, would you change your position?
If getting Fed Grants requires a full implementation plan, which requires the engineering study, will you support the study?
Regardless, this is the kind of thing that Coleman et al should be more proactive in explaing either the intent to pursue or why it is not an option.

If we got grants and something in writing that promises we won't loose more than 1 or 2 percent of our metered parking, I don't know that I would be a supporter, but I would shut up about it.

I've gotta ask man, if that wouldn't make you a supporter, what would? Because that sounds like absolutely no sacrifice for a ton of potential gain.
Sorry for digressing Walker.
On topic: My bachelor party plans are solely in Seattle (instead of a mix between the two), so maybe I'll check the SLUT out this weekend on my way downtown or something. I'll keep details posted.

I guess I still feel like it's a vanity project. I still feel like other streets that aren't the most important street in our city are better candidates, especially if the idea is actually economic development rather than transportation.
Upon further reflection though, sure, I'll wear the sticker if both of those conditions are met. There is no reason not to.
