I'm on mailing lists for lots of restaurants and they typically have some cool promotional dinners, but this one from G. Michael's is definitely something I haven't seen in Columbus...
Anyone going?
Also...how does one earn the title "Master of Whisky"? I need to look into that.

This is not a slam of G Michael's or of the event itself.
Everytime I see something like this, it reminds me of how we in Ohio get shit on thanks to our inane liquour laws and the venal, corrupt and worthless distributors who rake in the cash thanks to their protected monopolies. Other places (ie not Ohio) do Whisky dinners and they bring in cask strength, library releases and other items that are not typically available retail or are at insane prices for a bottle. We get a bunch of Whisky that I can drink at a bar on a Tues night - and did w/ Mercurious and DeVoe at the Bristol meet-up. Big fucking deal.
I spent the weekend in DC and, yes, I am really bitter on this today.

I met him (Glaser) at some tasting a few years ago. Had a couple of them, but don't remember what except for 'The Peat Monster' which I didn't like.
There used to be a ton (tun, he he, he) of cask strength stuff from defunct distilleries, but that has gotten harder to find. Party Source had them, but I didn't see anything that called to me last time I was there. Cask strength is my favorite anymore since you can have just a wee dram with a couple drops of water and be happy.
I was passing through Heathrow on the way to Cyprus one time. I wanted to taste some stuff at Duty Free whisky shop and the gentleman seemed rather suprised: "It's six in the morning!" "It is midnight for me."
Chivas Regal used to have something called 'The Century of Malts' which was a blend of 100 library whiskies. Really cool stuff, but it seems like Chivas (or their parent company) is more interested in making wild bottles for the Eurotrash club scene now.
I hardly drink whisky anymore though. Too much other alcohol in my bloodstream.

Well I am more partial to Islay (Lagavullin, Ardbeg, etc.) than the others, but like the better ones from other areas as well. But I still frown at the weaker ones from any area, including Islay, that restaurants here pawn off as the best thing to over charge you the privilege of trying.

Robert (the Master of Whiskey in Question) is actually a friend of mine. You get to be one after tons of training, including trips to the distilleries in Scotland, Ireland, Kentucky, etc. He has my dream job. I'll bet this event won't disappoint.

Ardbeg 10yr. is my favorite. If this winter goes on another week, I am going to be in need of another bottle. I've actually yet to need to buy it in Columbus - do you know which local state store sells it perhaps?
As a somewhat related aside, has anyone here ever done one of the Johnnie Walker "Journey of Taste" events? They are a fun night and an amazing deal.
