Don't tell me kids aren't changing for the worse...
COLUMBUS, Ohio Ã¢â‚¬â€œ A school bus full of children was reportedly ambushed Wednesday afternoon.
Columbus police said that the suspects attacked one of the students on the bus as he tried to jump out, NBC 4's Ana Jackson reported.
According to authorities, 10 to 20 juveniles surrounded the bus and began the ambush. Three teens have been charged with aggravated rioting.
Shattered glass littered the corner of St. Clair and Shoemaker avenues where police said that the suspects ambushed the school bus full of students from Independence High School.
Detectives said that a female suspect stepped out in front of the bus and refused to move, forcing it to stop.
At that time, 10 to 20 juveniles allegedly surrounded the bus and threw a rock at it, shattering a back window.
According to investigators, a student on the bus, Charles Turner, 18, thought the suspects were coming after him, so he tried to escape out the back emergency exit door. However, two suspects caught up to him and allegedly beat him up.
Police apprehended three suspects and questioned them. Several high-schoolers on the bus were also questioned.
Turner was taken to Grant Medical Center where he underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon. He was listed in fair condition.

The fact that my old high school now has metal detectors is proof enough for me...
Even though I was teased, I seriously NEVER felt my life was in danger at school... ever. I can't imagine being in a public school today.
Gawd, I sound like i'm 50...
"You know sonny, when I was a little girl, we were able to walk into our school without being patted down OR walking through a metal detector!"

I don't know Mike, I kind of get lost with the whole global karma thing, resulting in the inner city kids ambushing school busses because they saw we invaded Iraq. I think you'd be more likely to get me to agree that violent video games are at fault.
Really though? I think it's just a result of piss poor personal responsibility, a pity party mindset, and the glamorization of gangster life via music and movies.
Regardless, I'm becoming more and more scared of kids...and it's not because I'm getting older, it's because kids are becoming more dangerous. Wealthier, whiter kids are pulling a Columbine-esque deal at least annually, and poorer minority kids are playing knockout and ambushing schoolbusses.
Things are changing....for the much, much worse.

I was really tempted to buy into the whole military industrial complex/proximity to Columbine thing presented in Michael Moore's movie, but then I just didn't. I look at my own little brother, who has asperger syndrome, and was ridiculed in school to the point I thought he was the next school shooter, for real...or me on the parents of the kids doing it...and I'm quite sure Batelle or Wright Pat weren't a part of it ;)
Kids are just different now man, the level of cruelty and uncaring is really unique to me. And I do blame parents, even my own. My brother mentioned above finally did find a kid weaker than him, and one Halloween I caught him giving the kind of abuse he'd gotten to that kid. My own parents didn't do a thing, but I'll tell you what...I took him in the yard and scared the hell out of him, he apologized to that kid, and he acted right around him from then on.
Parents need to start f'ing parenting again, period...at least in my mind.
p.s. LOL...I swear to god Enzo, before I click on that link if you're saying that gangs of 20 kids would stop ambushing schoolbusses if they had the option to meditate...we can't be friends anymore ;)

One more thing E, you really need to look at that site and actually watch what it says.
That inner city detroit school?
well, the kids they interviewed went from a 3.4 to a 3.7 GPA...and a B in science to an A in science.
THESE ARE NOT THE KIDS HIJACKING BUSSES.

Why the hell can't these parents step in and whip the hell out of these punks? I'm old enough to still have scars on my ass from belts-- from my parents and my neighbors parents who had my folks' permission. Growing up in TN, my 6th grade teacher had permission by everyone's parents to paddle us for every misspelled word (god I'd be in trouble on many posts on CU I'm sure), and since they were so afraid of rearing "hicks," we also were paddled one lick for every verb not properly conjugated. I am 38 and sound like a grandpa, but tomorrow's society is F-CKED. Spoiled brats, hoodlums, out of control punks who are ruining it for everyone-- and it's their parents fault- being a single mom is NO excuse. GET CONTROL OF YOUR DAMN KIDS. I'd say punish the parents for their kid's behavior. I'd rather pay more taxes for parent jail and kid's holding schools where they got disciplined for bad behavior than increased funding (more mils) for these pathetic schools of ours. Sorry for the rant... wait, no I'm not.

Some parents let the schools and POLICE raise their kids. I sometimes wonder if the parents have given up? It is not an easy task, but extremely important. Sometimes I think people forget when they have children, they are RESPONSIBLE for assisting in the growth and development of their offspring. I honestly think the deterioration of the moral fiber of society coupled with busy schedules and sometimes drug and alcohol addiction make for a messy child rearing experience. I know that part of growing up is pushing the limits and doing some wild and crazy things, but gosh, violence is never ever ever ok. The Frisch's Big Boy prank was funny, this school bus situation is very sad.

I thought Moore's point wasn't a causal relationship between the two (Military and Columbine) but that such acts of aggression were the nature of the species, regardless of scale.

Yet another clear reason why my son will not attend Columbus Public...and don't give me crap about needing exposure to the real world. We will shield him as long as necessary since we have the means to. Let's be honest you don't hear stories of this happening in Dublin, UA, Westerville, etc.

I think it's clear kids are changing for the worse --and have been for a while-- but the important question is why. It doesn't make sense to not call it a societal issue --the children have only been on the planet a limited amount of time, and everything they have experienced is theoretically in the control of adults.
Nor is the old saw about beating the kids more and harder the answer. I was only spanked once and lightly in childhood, and I've never once started a fight, whereas I can attest to the fact that many kids with behavior problems are beaten regularly --child safety laws notwithstanding.
I think the only possible answer is that kids need to be taught better values, and while that ideally starts at home, it doesn't have to. Anyone can be a positive influence in a child's life.

I went to Columbus Public, as did my sister, who was one of two people in her graduating class of 100 to go on to Harvard.
Conversely, I used to sub at New Albany Middle School, and the kids there told me that half of their classmates were on drugs.
Clearly CPS has problems, but it's naive to think that avoiding CPS means avoiding problems... And I would NEVER send a child to UA, no matter how good the education. Ask anyone who grew up in this area, and I think you'll hear the same...

Bah. That's like saying every story's already been written. I'm not bullish on the idea of quantifying "evil," but I'm willing to bet that someone will always be able to do something that will shock or disgust me.
