From my experience, the edit feature is available until you type something really stupid or embarrassing, at which point it disappears.

Q: Sometimes I can edit my comments, and sometimes I can’t. What gives?
A: Comment editing is enabled for 120 minutes (2 hours) after a comment has been posted. This should give you plenty of time to correct typos or mistakes.

The reason for this is because we have had problems in the past (both on CU and other websites) with people who go back to edit/delete old messages in an ongoing conversation and completely destroy the flow of conversation for anyone else trying to read. It gets messy and ridiculous, and we'd prefer to preserve conversations that can be useful for anyone looking for relevant information.
That being said, Anne & I are always more than happy to correct something older in a message if it needs corrected. Just PM either of us. A lot of times a the subject line of a conversation needs edited later on, especially for events that might have a date/time change/correction.
