Schiller Park may get kioskThe original design was too tall, the German Village Commission said.
By GARTH BISHOP
The German Village Society wants to install an informational kiosk in Schiller Park, but it be awhile before it happens.
The idea of bringing a kiosk into the park has long intrigued the society.
"We realized that there's nothing in the park that gives you a lot of information about the park," society Executive Director Katharine Moore said.
The park is visited by a wide variety of people, some of whom may not be aware of all its uses and available activities.

This seems a bit silly.....it's a park, how hard is it to figure out what to do?

Ever been inside the rec center there? They've got a jam-packed weekly schedule of activities and events for all sorts of ages groups. Some are free and some aren't. Some are for certain ages groups. Some are members only and some are open to the public.
I think a Kiosk could be a benefit... especially for those who don't venture inside to find out what all is going on at the park. 8)

Couldn't they just put a bulletin board outside?
Posted 5 years ago # -
That's totally not as cool.

Heh.
Maybe I just have a biased against the word kiosk.

And our tax dollars should be used for cool?
Maybe you should finance it and charge $0.10 for every use. Think it’s such a hot idea still?
Bulletin board does the job.

Wouldn't be your tax dollars, it would be funded by the German Village Society Parks Committee.

Geez! People are sensitive around here. How much do you think that would cost even if it were bieng paid for by taxpayers? 10k? 20k?
That's a fraction of a penny out of everyone's pocket. I'm personally more worried about the billions that need to be spent on sewer lines and the $50 million Main St. bridge. Or how about the millions of dollars that are spent annually trying to provide services for suburban sprawl? Hell, how about the millions they want to spend on the dilapidated old theater in King-Lincoln?
A kiosk isn't even a drop in the bucket.

Is $20K nothing to you daddy warbucks? Money is money, no matter what percentage it is of a total dollar figure.
That’s the problem with today’s politics. The taxes become someone else’s money, not "your" money. Guess what, it is your money.

Let me say again...it isn't your money. It's paid for by the German Village Society, just like the 150,000.00 it took to put in the new lights 5 years ago. German Village Society projects aren't funded by tax dollars, it's privately funded by memberships and donations.
So, unless you're a German Village resident AND member of the society, don't sweat it.

Thanks for the very educated lesson about money and taxes.
Think about it though...Property taxes are roughly 1.5% of a property's value. Or in German Village...about 1.5% of $500,000. That's $7,500/year. Add some local income taxes to that and it doesn't even take two residences to pay for a kiosk.
Even if the city were paying for this, I think the residents deserve to have a bone thrown thier way every now and again for sustaining the country's premier historical urban neighborhood.

I think this thread is continuing just because everyone likes to say the word "kiosk."

How about a different bone...Take my real estate taxes and use them for what they are meant to be used for; Education. And a kiosk is a bone for you...Wow, easily amused.
Any other tax questions and I'll help with that too.
As for the privately funding of this, since that foundation is a non profit, it is costing me as a taxpayer; Taxes that the organization should be paying.

As if your taxes would LOWER if non-profits paid "their share"...
Your arguement is really getting stretched here.
What I took it to the other extreme and said that this kiosk will help to promote activities at the park, a lot of which are aimed at kids, which keep them off the streets and out of trouble, which in turn leads to a lower crime rate by deterring kids from becoming future criminals. Then would it be worth tax dollars (even though this costs nothing in tax money)?

I'm not entirely sure that you made a point here. To me, it's just a bunch of broken sentances that makes some insinuation that we should abolish or penalize all charitable organizations.

wow, really reaching there bro. So the 20,000.00 in donations that the nonprofit raises to pay for the kiosk should be taxed as income, with those tax dollars given to the city...and that would make some significant difference in your personal tax burden?
yeah...ok.

If you realized how much I pay in taxes yearly, you would understand why this burns me so bad...Looking at non-profits, churches and other tax free organizations who have well paid executive directors (so at the end, they have no profit; therefore staying non-profit for the next tax year) as well as the priests I've been to dinner with at over $1K per head b/c they "have to spend the money"....
Plain and simple this issue is a hot button with me, b/c I don't enjoy all those perks; I own companies who are taxed, all the time.
I also look at the tax money as my money, b/c it is...

You can't hate on all non-profits just because some are corrupt. There are plenty of for-profit companies that are corrupt too that either get tax breaks when they shouldn't, or cook the books to where they don't pay what they should.
I'm not well versed enough in the goings-on of the German Village Society to know if they're as evil and corrupt as you're trying to make all non-profits sound, but I highly doubt they are.
Stereotyping does not make for a good argument on any topic.

Pretty much no one at the Society even gets paid, including Katharine Moore.
