My favorite park in the state! tons of cabins and secluded campsites, instead of the usual trailerpark vibe.
and yeah, there's two sites you can reserve that you can only get to via canoe! (i mean, I suppose you could hike there too but that's not as fun)
Kind of a haul for some sand, but I love that place. Mountain bike trails, deserted gravel roads, 26-mile backpacking loop across the street…sigh.

We used to call it Kitty Litter Beach. Once on an early morning summer Saturday I brought a big sack of seashells I'd collected on Captiva, spreading them along the Alum Creek shoreline to see what the kids would do.

kitty litter is a perfect descriptor!!!
Lake Hope sounds really cool and I would like to do some camping there. I noticed there are some "haunted" sites nearby: MoonvilleTunnel & Hope Furnace. The beach &/or swimming areas are also of interest to my wife and me. Does anyone have specific suggestions for campsites, swim spots, & anything else fun to do?

Lake Hope has camper cabins a friend has rented in the past and liked. My understanding was they were in between a permanent tent and a regular cabin.
As far as Moonville goes.....I went in college, not really much to see. There is the old train tunnel and I can't remember if we could drive there or had to park and hike. It's cool but the tunnel is the only thing there.

The cabins with fireplaces are a New Year tradition for us and 3 or 4 other families. We went to Lake Hope one summer and while the air conditioned cabins are pretty comfortable, the beach goers did seem kinda trailer-y... One spring break, us Dads and kids (Moms stayed home) got the lodge (sleeps 24 comfortably for $400 I think) and it was awesome! Commercial kitchen, 2 living rooms and lots of bathrooms. Lake Hope is close to Hocking Hills and has the biggest beaver village I've ever seen. Highly recommended.
How about a beach/bar on top of a parking garage?

Yes! We need to do this with the City Center Garage. ;)

That's a huge roof, so maybe just a portion of the City Center garage. That does seem like a good location though. It will overlook Columbus Commons when it's done. You could enjoy an outdoor concert in the commons while sitting in a beach chair sipping on a margarita.
