Bring a coat, by the way. It's generally kinda chilly.
It's hard to decide if I like the PCH (CA1) north or south out of the city more.
If you do have a car, you might also want to consider doing part or all of the 49 mile drive. It's not a bad way to see the major and minor sights of SF. You also get to experience microclimates which are a pretty strange weather feature of the SF area.
