I'm returning for more bell ringing duties with the Salvation Army this season, and this year I've gotten a better time and location! I'll be at the North Market on Saturday, December 12th from 9:30am to 11:30am to help raise funds for Salvation Army Columbus. The money raised from this campaign go toward social service programs that last year-round.

So stop by the North Market on the 12th if you're free that morning, and say hi and drop off a donation! If I've got to stand out in the cold for two hours, the least you can do is drop by and keep me company for a minute or two, right? ;)

The Salvation Army does a lot of good work but I am deeply disappointed by the Houston Salavation Army chapter which is checking for birth certificates or Social Security cards for the children before allowing them to be part of a toy drive.

Hopefully there is national outrage about this policy so it is reversed. In the meantime, I'll be donating to our local Bethlehem on Broad Street charity and not to the Salvation Army.

I should probably take a moment to clarify that I'll be at the North Market in Columbus, Ohio on the 12th and not at the Houston Farmer's Market doing bell ringing.

Hope to see everyone else swing by on the 12th.

I have no intention to hijack this thread. I think my previous post directly relates to the topic. Again, no doubt the Salvation Army does a lot of good work.

But I think most people would agree that excluding some children from a toy drive is despicable. The Salvation Army also has a track record of discriminating against people who are gay.

Don't sweat it, I have nothing else to say about the matter.

In this case, I'd attribute the stinginess is due more to the fact that this is in Texas (Sorry Somer) than to this being a nationwide Salvation Army policy. Charity is voluntary and choices people make are personal.

Good luck to you Walker! I ring on Tuesday nights at Marysville Kroger. The Salvation Army does an amazing job of being a real and tangible ministry to lots of people in need. Kudos to you for helping support it!
