I was so excited when i just went on CNN.com and the first thing i saw was a pic of JD Salinger

i did read a short story that Salinger wrote that had a character "Vincent Caulfield" that had a brother Holden who died in the war. anyhow......

A long time ago there was an article in (I think) The Atlantic where the author provoked and drew out a lawsuit from Salinger precisely for the purporse of getting him in a face 2 face situation. Crazy.

While not having read the "sequel" I hope they squash it like a little bug. seems like a clear play for publicity. Anyone want to start a pool on when the real author's name is revealed?
It's like doing a sequel to Citizen Kane.

Yes, we need more things like 'The Bachelor' and 'Twilight.' Original works of deep importance.
So what? Catcher is part of the fabric of any person with a brain's reference now. It is open source. The writer played off of it, doesn't pretend to be Salinger and may or may not succeed. No wonder literature is dead when people want to treat it as a sacrosanct mummy instead of a living thing.

I didn't see it as being treated as sacred; rather, it's a matter of copyright laws.
At least we know that Salinger's still alive.

I was referring to the attitude of those who act like fan-created derivative works are somehow unacceptable for literature.
With regards to copyright laws, Salinger is in good company with Disney corporation in terms of going after derivatives.

if i were salinger, i wouldn't like it either. i wouldn't want other people making money off of my work. i'm not saying the derivative sucks. i would imagine, that it most likely isn't as good at Catcher in the Rye. just guessing here.
