St. Charles Preparatory School or to be precise the Catholic Dudes bought the Old Dealers Lumber site at Long and Nelson Road for 1.4 million dollars in December of last year.
I heard from a neighbor that they want to buy up the houses on Nelson Road and Clifton that are next to it.
The rumor is there is a meeting to be held Saturday May 7th at the old Dealers Lumber site to tell us more?
I have received no official notice of this and was wondering if anyone can find out any real info.
Really freaked out by this news as I love my house and it might be stolen from me!

With Gorden Gee's plan for OSU East and recent purchase of the old VA off of Leonard - this area is becoming more more attractive and this I believe this is considered North of Broad too

Since the "Catholic Dudes" do not pay property tax, that property IS being stolen from the tax payers in a manner of speaking.

So the taxes from the property St. Charles sits on will still be filling the coffers and no "stealing" will take place.

Schools pay taxes? There is a chapel at St. Charles

nope. Church schools (edit: depending on their classification) do not pay property taxes. look it up.
recent local controversy over this issue in the news, btw: http://www.dispatchpolitics.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2010/03/02/copy/upper-arlington-aims-to-block-new-church-school.html?adsec=politics&sid=101

It isn't necessarily St. Charles, although given the proximity, it probably is. The St. Charles property is under the ownership of a different bishop than the lumber yard, but all probably same diocese.
With the Bag of Nails there, it seems to limit their direct connection from the current school to this property.
It has been ages since I drove by there, but about 1.5 years ago I had heard that some tenants had committed to a new building to be developed in the vacant lot south of the lumber yard across Long Street and west of OBN across Nelson. Did anything ever break ground?

Land that is removed from the property tax base actually raises everyone else's calculated property tax by the formula currently in use. That churches are not taxed is (IMO) bending the principal of separation of church and state. In my opinion religious organizations should not enjoy tax free status for no other reason than just because they call themselves a church. In my opinion this is a form of theft. Look up the many ways this has led to abuse.
The fact that you wish to counter my argument with an ad hominem attack is the real stupid in this thread.

They did an alright job with it... similar to the one that was just built at High & Dodrige.

The fact that you wish to counter my argument with an ad hominem attack is the real stupid in this thread.Land is removed and added to tax rolls all the time. If the gov't buys property it becomes tax exempt. If they sell old schools or other property to a private buyer, it becomes taxed.
The original poster said he didn't want his house "stolen," which DavidF and Walker accurately questioned, since it won't happen.
The land purchase isn't "theft" and nothing is being "stolen" from taxpayers. It is a ridiculous notion, which I think you know.

IMO allowing tax breaks to help fund religious organizations is a form of theft because everyone else's tax bill goes up. It's that simple.
Yes governments and schools shuffle property around all the time. But local governments have an actual constitutional mandate to help provide public education and other public services, they do NOT have a mandate to support religion in any way. ANY religion. Period. And it's a con game that the taxpayers have suffered for too long.
Don't even get me started on allowing federal student grants to pay for theology and related degrees at religious schools.

From what I have heard, the purchase of Dealers Lumber is for a future expansion of the Athletic Fields for St. Charles. Apparently this site was selected after an offer was made to put the fields at Nelson Park, keeping the park public, with St. Charles maintaining the park itself. What I have heard was that this idea was not acceptable, so the move was made on the Dealer's site. Hearing that the school is looking to purchase other homes/sites in the area does not surprise me either.
The Nelson Park proposal was intriguing to me. You get an upgrade to a City Park, and park maintenence from a private entity. All this while the park would remain public. That sounds pretty cool, but the devil is always in the details.
As far as the Dealer's site goes, I think we missed a tremendous opportunity to use that site as a staging ground for the OSU/Near East side project that is just getting off the ground. Think of the savings in the transportation of materials using the active rail line that is adjacent to the Dealer's property. We could ship the materials in, off load them at Dealer's, and store them at the same site until they were needed at one of the many newly developed sites on the Near East Side. I'd bet that this whole thing may not be over though.

Development Commission application has been made for the redevelopment of that site.

I work at the state dept of taxation but I don't deal with the real property tax. Since I am too lazy to ask the people who know, I checked the county auditor's website. The location for St. Charles was assessed $0 property taxes this year.
They are going to have to buy your house if they want it. I don't think they would have much luck trying to get the state to force you to sell through eminent domain; the new use is not going to generate more tax revenues. I don't know, but it is possible that Ohio enacted an "anti-Kelo" law to prevent the state from using eminent domain for economic reasons.
