For the last few weeks I've been hearing a rumor that Coleman is going to be a DC lobbyist or appointed the US Ambassador to Albania. I wouldn't give these much credence if he weren't one of the first mayors of a large city to sign on with the Obama camp. Has anyone else heard such things? If Coleman would leave mid-term, who would be mayor?

If Coleman would leave mid-term, who would be mayor?
Walker on MWF and LizLess on TR. It's a big job :)ETA: I would be bummed, but happy for him if it was something he was interested in/excited about doing. We all have to move on and advance in life. Hopefully he's laid enough ground work someone could go in and start checking off the to-do list. How would this work? Appointment? Election? Is there a Mayor ProTem on the city council (scary!)?

Sec. 64. Succession of mayor-- acting mayor.
If the mayor dies, becomes permanently disabled from performing the duties of office, resigns, or moves from the city during the term of office, the mayor shall be succeeded in office, until the 1st day of January following the next regular municipal election, by the president of the council who shall thereby cease to be a member of council. At the next regular municipal election following the death, resignation or removal of the mayor from the city, if such election be the time for the regular election of a mayor, a mayor shall then be elected to serve for a term of four years; otherwise for the remainder of the unexpired term.
If the mayor be temporarily absent from the city, the mayor may designate the director of public service, the director of public safety, or the president of city council as acting mayor. If the mayor becomes temporarily disabled from performing the duties of mayor for any cause, the director of public service, or if absent the director of public safety, or if absent the president of city council, shall become acting mayor. During a period of temporary absence of the mayor the acting mayor shall exercise such powers and duties of the office of mayor as the mayor shall delegate. During a period of temporary disability of the mayor the powers and duties of the office of mayor shall devolve upon the acting mayor. In either case the mayor may invoke this provision by written communication to the appropriate officer to be named the acting mayor, but in the case of temporary disability, failure to do so shall not prevent the proper officer from performing the powers and duties of the office of mayor. Nothing herein shall prevent the president of city council from exercising the president's powers and duties as a member of council during the temporary absence or disability of the mayor. (Amended 11-5-74; 11-3-89.)So, it looks like Council President Mental would become mayor.

Albania? He should get a better country than that. If it were me, I wouldn't leave for anything less than Turkey.

Of course, none of the rumors have come from any sources with any sort of authenticity to them. I wouldn't rule it out completely, but it mostly sounds like a lot of speculation right now.

I will be sad, but he deserves it. Columbus is in the midst of our renaissance leading to 2012, because we have had visionary leadership. I'd hate to see us fall back into the same group think that brought us City Center, Son of Heaven and Ameriflora. (each had their moments, but for the most part big flops). If you ask me, one of the biggest successes we had in being innovative was when 'Teachers' was filmed at Central High School - that was a great time in Columbus.

While he's had his ups and downs, and we're in a bit of a "down" right now, I think Coleman has mostly been good for the city of Columbus during his time as Mayor, and I'd like to see him continue at least for the rest of this term.
If there are any legs to this rumor though, I agree with Jody and Somer though and would wish him well. As long as he doesn't take his Urban Ventures Coordinator with him. ;) That guy needs to hang around a bit longer.

I would think that after doing a lot of the work, MC would want to take Columbus all the way to 2012. It's not that far off.

I like Coleman. I think he's a good mayor that is really moving this city forward. I seriously doubt he would leave mayoral office in the middle of a term to take another job. Career politicians are judged on every move they make forever and while which makes them consider the long term effects of basically every move. This would really hurt him in any future elections so I don't see it happening. An appointment from Obama I could see, but for a private sector job like lobbyist. No way, that would be classless.

My vote would be for Mike Brown.

I hope it's true. Mayor Coleman seems like a nice person but I'd like to see some change. He seems to work too closely with the developers and chamber of commerce types.
The Columbus electorate is more progressive and would be better served by a mayor that isn't a proxy of the city's titans.

I also love that he has his ear to the street.

'Visionary Leadership'....please! The best thing to stop the downward spin of our great city is to get Coleman with his highly questionable personal (there are reasons he is not in D.C. already) and professional ethics, and the rest of the democratic ilk that have paralyzed Columbus with a waste-laden budget. Come on folks! Lets get back to focusing on public safety, wise development that gives everyone a fair opportunity, infrastructure improvements and transparent municipal government. The best thing for this city to move forward is for Coleman to go off to Albania or some other obscure post to serve his Lordship Obama. Maybe then a true 'renaissance' will take place. Until then crime will increase, important city services will continue to evaporate and the decline of Columbus will spiral further out of control.

what decline of Columbus? It happens to be the only city in Ohio that continues to grow in virtually all areas while the rest of the state erodes.

I voted for the guy each time, but I would say his legacy is beginning to tarnish. For a little perspective, try naming some of his successes and failures in this discussion. I'm having a hard time being objective, considering the collapse of the streetcar initiative, the demise and failure of the Columbus Urban Growth Corp., and inability to balance the current budget (necessitating big cutbacks and a huge tax increase proposal). Columbus has grown during his term but how much credit should he get for that?

Decline?...watch the news, read the paper, walk the streets (try Champion Ave or 22nd at 1am), knock on the doors of closed recreation centers, talk to members of the public safety forces, look at vacant office space, unfinished buildings and the debacle that is about to happen to the former City Center site. Even the pro-Administration media that exists in Columbus does not always paint the best of pictures. Meanwhile staffers and the Mayor take trips to Isreal with taxpayer dollars and hold 'dog and pony shows' by forcing hardworking police recruits to be the photo backdrop for political theater with the current occupant of the White House - again all at taxpayer expense. Until there is real change more money will be demanded from the taxpayer with no accountibility and promised catastrophe if the taxpayers do not succumb to an increase. Who knows, maybe Council President Mike Mentel could be a breath of fresh air in Central Ohio? But then reality will set in and the same liberal city council with the same bureaucrats will be exactly where they are today unless there is real change.

wow...you mean there are poor neighborhoods with high crime rates? That's totally unique to Columbus. The country is in the deepest economic decline in 50+ years as a whole (thanks to Republican leadership, btw)...and meanwhile, Columbus has stood out as the single city in Ohio that has outperformed the curve. The "debacle" that is about to happen to the former City Center site? What debacle? I'm personally very pleased with the project. "Forcing" hardworking police recruits to do what?!? Seems to me, those police recruits are currently employed because of the local and national administration saving their jobs.
I've lived in Columbus for 40 years, and in the last 10 have seen the most significant improvements than at any other time. Downtown has become more active and vibrant, the national recognition for the city is at an all time high, and on and on.
p.s. I don't see the streetcar as a failure of Coleman and company as much as a failure of the uninformed citizenry of Columbus.
