ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan hired Rich Rodriguez away from his alma mater after failing to bring back one of its own.A man with ties to both the Wolverines and West Virginia might've helped.
College football's winningest program ended its coaching search Sunday, nearly a month after it started, by announcing Rodriguez would succeed retiring Lloyd Carr.

Well, once he gets the personnel in place, his spread/read-option offense combined with Michigan recruiting power will definitely be very formidable. Unless they start prepping now (and possibly even if they do), a LOT of teams are going to have trouble dealing with that.
That said, he's going to have to start fielding some teams that know how to play defense too if he wants to succeed in the Big Ten.
Still, I do think it's a good pick for them (what's with UM poaching TWO coaches from WVU this year though?)...

I'm sad about this. I was really pulling for Les Miles since he's so easy to hate. Rodriguez is just big and dopey, and not the jerk that Miles comes off as.
Oh well...looking forward to watching Rodriguez mismanage the clock, blow crucial timeouts, and call head scratching plays in big spots.

Rodriguez said he doesn't expect to coach West Virginia when it plays Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. He said it typically is the university's job to make the decision on who would coach in the bowl game.full story"My focus is going to be on the University of Michigan, and I don't think it best serves West Virginia if I'm thinking about the Big House," he said.

To be honest I'm disappointed in Michigan's hire. I don't think Rodriguez is of Michigan caliber, he is very good but not great... I feel sad for West Virginia fans too, it must be hard to see a local guy leave. Just Imagine if Tressel went to say USC or Notre Dame?
The spread he runs could be trouble, but I imagine OSU will adapt if they have problems with it.
Our problems with the spread aren't due to our athletes, just scheme.

I think Rodriguez will be a formidable foe at Michigan in a few years, but the offense he runs is so different than what Michigan has been recruiting for for so long that it's going to take a couple of years for him to recruit and develop high schoolers more in the mould he'd prefer. Nevertheless, Michigan still has a fair amount of pure athletic ability and Rodriguez has surprised a lot of people by being better than "just good," IMHO. I wouldn't underestimate him at all, though I think he'd have to do pretty darn well to turn out to be as prescient a pick as Tressel.
(I was kind of hoping they'd pick the Appalachian State guy! That would have been hilarious. After all, though, that was effectively who we picked ... Youngstown State in the years before we picked Tressel was about as dominant in I-AA as Appalachian State has been the past few years now.)

It does seem a strange coincidence that UM recruits a guy known for the one offense OSU seems to have more problems with than any other...by a lot :shock:
Hell, if nothing else, it's a helluva lot of fun to watch and could really bring an extra spark to the rivalry.

The spread/read option offense is currently the Hot New Thing (tm) in College Football. As Athletic Directors and fanbases want their teams to win, it'll continue spreading (hurrr) and taking over college programs until it's common enough that the knowledge and game plans to STOP it become common enough that it's no longer effective.
And at that point, something new will come along.

I grew up in Morgantown and my family is still there. All I can say ... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Rich and his trailer-park wife will be a great fit in Ann Arbor.
In order for him to succeed at UM, he will need to hit the lottery like he did with Slaton and White. And if his big game coaching is at the level he showed against Pitt, we ain't got nothing to worrry about.
