Later this month, I'll be flying to to Seattle to drive all the way back to Columbus with a friend. Does anyone know of any good pit stops or sights to see while we are crossing the country? Has anyone ever done this drive? Here is the general route we'll be taking:

Missoula, Yellowstone or Bozeman and Madison would be where I would stop.

Can you give a general idea of what you want?
There is wild kitsch like Wall Drug and then there is natural beauty like the Badlands. Wineries in E WA. I can probably dig up from memory some good eats as well.
Are you married to that route? Dropping down to OR (Willamette Valley) then ID-WY-SD seems better as you can hit Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.

I'll get in to Seattle at around noon on Friday and will probably have to be back at work on Tuesday morning. So as long as I can squeeze it in during that time, the sky is the limit. I've never been through this part of the country, so I'm wide open to anything. AH, I'm not married to this route. Thats just what Google comes up with when you ask for driving directions from Seattle to Columbus. I thought it might be fun to pick a couple destinations and plan the route around that.

I concur on the Badlands in southwestern South Dakota, which makes for convenient stops at Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse Monument in the Black Hills as well. Definitely Yellowstone and Grand Teton too.

I rode by bike from Chittenden Ave to Olympia once. But not that exact route I recommend the following:
Badlands NP, SD: not as bad as they claim, rather pleasnt actually.
Mt Rushmore, SD: free for cyclists, but not motorists- maybe avoid it then.
Old McDonnalds Farm: Black Hill's petting farm with goat bridge
Ryegate, MT: Annual testicle festival
Helena, MT: State capitol building, governor's secretary is very nice guy.
Polo Pass/Clearwater Wilderness, ID- best bike ride I ever had dropping down the pass into the forest. Sign: Windy Road next 77 miles.
Missouri River Hills, central South Dakota wonderland.
Northstar Saloon, Winner, SD: Like Northstar Cafe but with guns on the wall. More affordable, nice employee.
Geddes, SD: Party-hardy little town in central SD. Nice lady there, and karoke at the Blue Room.
see my photos of all this on my facebook page.

What do you think of this?

Don't take the interstate. Then you can see the overwhelming number of non-franchise places that exist in the nation and ghost towns.

Given the time constraints, I don't think it will be possible to avoid them completely. It would be nice to get off of them for a bit though.

Mercurious's route looks to be the better of the options to me. Hits more of the hightlights like the Yellowstone/Tetons area and the Black hills and Badlands. Also, I'd recommend spending a little time in the Twin Cities area.

We drove cross-country from Oregon to Ohio when we moved back here... it is seriously all a blur! I think because we had an open pickup w/all our crap in the world in it we kind of wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible. So, yeah, pointless post #200 from me. :)

I have driven from Seattle to Columbus twice (and twice in the opposite direction). Your first route (90/94) will take you past tons of cool stuff. And the stuff I'm going to list here:
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. It is now one of the most expensive real estate markets in the United States. I have to admit that it's a beautiful area.
Columbus, Montana (Do they have an Underground?) -- it's between Bozeman and Billings. After driving an entire day through Montana, you're going to want to stop. Especially when you realize that you're going to have to drive another half day through Montana. There is only so much of Montana that a person can take.
Cleveland, North Dakota. It's near Medina.
The Roger Maris Museum is just off I-94 in the West Acres Shopping Center in Fargo, North Dakota. It's a museum dedicated to a baseball player. And it's in a mall.

The Mall of America, Bloomington, Minnesota. I don't know what to say about a mall with a roller coaster in it, except that Rybicki is a perfect place to try eating cheese curds, ja.

If you take the route across I-90 and South Dakota, you will go through Sturgis. Too bad the motorcycle rally isn't until August.

I've also made this drive twice. Though I'm of no good help, as I managed to do it in less than 3 days both times.
