Apparently comedian Robert Schimmel died last Friday. I wasn't aware of it until I looked at one of those "2010 In Memoriam" on a website. I'm always surprised by at least one person on those lists but I was shocked at this.
Anyway, it was a car accident. Too bad.

Fresh Air replayed their interview with him in tribute. What an amazingly funny man stuck in the middle of so much personal tragedy.

I feel horrible for his daughter. (Not that it's her fault), but the guilt she must feel will live with forever. Truly sad.

Shimmel was one of my favorite standup comedians ever; he was under appreciated. He cheated death so many times, I guess it just caught up with him finally.
Probably one of the funniest/saddest pieces of standups he did was when he talked about losing *all* of his hair during chemo, and even though he was told he was going to lose his hair, he was still kind of surprised when all his pubes fell out, and how depressing it was, and how he never imagined there would be a time in his life when he would be shopping for a merkin.

that's a total drag. i hadn't heard. i really loved how BRUTALLY honest he could be about his own life on stage. far more "lenny bruce" than any dozen comics who throw around lenny's name around as an influence.
the world's worse without him.
