Columbus Crew says midfielder Kirk Urso has died

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Columbus Crew midfielder Kirk Urso died overnight, and no cause of death has been determined, a county coroner said. Police in Columbus were called to a bar around 12:50 a.m. Sunday, and Urso, 22, was taken from there to Grant Medical Center, The Columbus Dispatch reported. He was pronounced dead at 1:51 a.m., Franklin County Coroner Jan Gorniak said. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Dispatcher Requests Medic For 'Very Drunk Person' Before Crew's Urso Found Dead

A police dispatcher requested a medic to a Park Street bar early Sunday morning. The caller requested a medic for a person described as "very drunk." According to a dispatcher, the person fell down and was unconscious. A witness said that he saw medics trying to resuscitate a young man on a sidewalk across the street from the bar.

I'm no coroner, but it appears that this could be caused by alcohol poisoning. If this is in fact the case, the bar staff/ management should face criminal prosecution for over serving. I have seen a lot of people that should not have been served, served (on more than one occasion, I was probably over served) and I have never seen someone served to death. I feel for this poor kid and his family, as well as the reputation of our city, the world takes notice when perfectly healthy 20 something professional athletes drop dead for no good reason.

This is such sad news. I would be very surprised if it was alcohol poisoning. I have a hard time believing that a professional athletic recovering from an injury would drink enough to die from alcohol alone (not that it couldn’t happen).

But it’s sad none the less.

The coroner's report mentioned something about a heart condition - one that would have gone undetected. Alcohol would certainly exacerbate something of that nature.

My first thought - after hearing that he was rehabbing - was narcotic pain meds + alcohol = death. It doesn't even take a lot... especially, if he had the pre-existing heart condition.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The day after Kirk Urso passed away, Crew head coach Robert Warzycha visited the bereaved family at a Columbus hotel. Urso died early Sunday of an undetermined cause after collapsing in a Columbus restaurant/bar. An autopsy Monday was inconclusive and a toxicology report could take up to six weeks. The Associated Press quoted Franklin County coroner Jan Gorniak as saying, “It’s leaning toward an apparent natural death, but we don’t know why.” Gorniak also added that there were some “heart changes.”
