Hey all, maybe its just me, growing up in the burbs and all, but has anyone else noticed people walking in their backyards and unloading a magazine as the ball dropped? I was on my was home from work when it dropped and noticed alot of gunfire around the Gv,Mv, Vassor village areas? Anyone else?

I thought that was just something that us rednecks did out in the country. I had no idea this sort of stuff went on downtown....posers.

LOL!
This has always been the case. You should have been at my place on the corner of Whittier and Parsons a couple years back at midnight.
I remember my ex (small town gal) asked one year "are those fireworks for New Years???" I just said yeah.

I grew up on the near east side and that is more or less tradition over there. Wouldn't suprise me in the least if it happens all over the place. The good thing is you can at least figure out who has the biggest piece in the hood or I guess the fastest in some cases.

Im not gonna lie, but I was freaked out! I talked to some of my neighbors, and they were like, "Eh, it happens". It just seems a little odd that Cpd wouldnt be going apeshit with something like that.

happened every year i've been in cols. you get used to it. cpd has too much to worry about that evening and will only get rattled if bodies start piling up.
I know this sounds unlikely, but I've never heard of someone injured from it.

Trust me, you head a little outside of MV, you'll hear gunshots nightly...and no sirens afterwards. They're waiting until someone gets hit

NYE gunshots are proof that idiots have guns, and are a good argument for arming one's self.

People are the stupidest fucking things on the planet. Honestly, do these morons just think the bullets fly up to the moon, or what? I'm serious, is there some kind of debate going on amongst The Common Man as to whether or not gravity exists? Am I going to see presidential candidates appeal to their bases by speaking out against Isaac Newton?
If you can't describe the trajectory of a particle in a vacuum given its initial velocity and inclination, you shouldn't be allowed to own a gun. Where the hell did you even get $400 to blow on a handgun, anyway?? What job pays so well, and requires so little intelligence?
Time to bring back the meat-packing plants.
Sidenote to lifeliberty: People are killed and injured all the time by this. Maybe Columbus is covered by some kind of one-way protective dome that I'm not aware of.
Edit: I think this is the angriest I've ever sounded, I love this post.

I know it happens, i was saying that I've not heard of any instance in columbus(ohio)
(I should have specified)

Unless you can shoot a bullet out of the sky as it comes flying down towards your head, I'd say that celebratory gunfire is a better argument for never, ever leaving your armored house.

oddly enough, there was a Klu Klux Klan wedding a few years back where guns were fired into the air and a member of the bridal party was hit by a falling bullet. It didn't pop right up in google, I'll post a link when I find the story again...
Bottom line of these studies, says he, is that the terminal velocity of your typical bullet coming back down varies a lot but is normally more than 200 feet per second...
And, other writers on the subject (there have been quite a few) say that tests on cadavers show that skin is punctured and underlying organs messed up (my words, not theirs) at bullet velocities that exceed 180 feet per second. And, since falling bullets typically strike people in the head or shoulders, this appears to me to be a very dangerous practice."

and you can get a gun (new) for $125. a Hi-point. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hi-Point_Firearms and they are made in Ohio. can't comment on quality. I can say from a "gun-snob" perspective I would not get one. you get what you pay for.

It may be a little unfair to assume that the shots are being fired into the air.
They definitely don't fly up to the moon if you shoot into the ground rather than into the air. If people are shooting into the air that is extremely stupid and dangerous regardless of your location, I'd agree. The ball drop is hardly an excuse to throw typical safety precautions out the window. Furthermore, I would never endorse discharging a weapon within city limits for any reason other than self-defense.

I agree. It's also a great argument for overturning the 2nd Amendment. Anything else is just giving Tylenol to a cancer patient...addressing the symptoms.
There are plenty of examples in history where "a few" have ruined it for "the many".

problem with overturning the 2nd amdmt is it would only take guns away from law abiding citizens and essentially make them all victims.
“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.†(Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774-1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764)
When only cops have guns, it's called a "police state". Claire Wolfe
Don't think of it as `gun control', think of it as `victim disarmament'. If we make enough laws, we can all be criminals. Jeff Snyder

I'd like to THINK they're not, but the times when I've seen folks celebrating this way, unfortunately it has indeed been into the air...
