Thanks for posting Walker. We've had a group of volunteers take over the planning this year and we're thrilled. They plan to add bag pipes and other features to honor injured bicyclists and remember those killed on Ohio roads.
Bump! Tonight!
Press Release:
COLUMBUS CYCLISTS TAKE TO THE STREET FOR 8th ANNUAL RIDE OF SILENCE,
WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 7PM • STATEHOUSE
Somber reminder for motorists to Share the Road
WHO: - 800 local cyclists expected
- Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman
- Jonathan Hughes, Administrator, Office of Planning & Program Management, Ohio Department of Transportation
- Kimberly Schwind, Public Relations Manager, AAA Ohio Auto Club
WHAT: 8th annual Ride of Silence is a 12-mile urban ride with a police escort. This ride honors bicyclists injured or lost in motor vehicle-bicycle accidents. Ride of Silence participants will wear black armbands in remembrance of riders lost. The ride is free and open to the public.
WHERE: South side of the Ohio Statehouse  State Street
WHEN: Wednesday, May 18, program at 6:45 p.m., ride at 7 p.m.
WHY: The ride honors riders killed in motor vehicle-bicycle collisions in order to raise cycling awareness and to encourage drivers to Share the Road. The Ride of Silence is a slow group ride, akin to a funeral procession, in total silence. The ride is a safe, responsible, professional and mature response to the aggressiveness, intimidation, and carnage that cyclists face on the roads.
ABOUT RIDE OF SILENCE  The Columbus ride is the second largest of the more than 300 simultaneous events held around the world. The first Ride of Silence was held in Dallas in 2003 after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was killed by a passing bus on an empty road. The ride has since grown to include more than 18,000 riders in 296 cities around the world.
ABOUT CONSIDER BIKING  Consider Biking’s ( http://www.conisderbiking.org ) primary mission is making central Ohio increasingly safe, accessible, and friendly to bicycle transportation. Consider Biking partners with local stakeholders to improve streets, bridges, and trails in order to make riding to work, shopping, and exercising by bicycle safe and fun for everyone in the Columbus metropolitan area.
