Rickenbacker facing deadline to fly solo as county subsidies ending

Franklin County subsidies to Rickenbacker International Airport are scheduled to end next year, but airport officials are hoping economic development efforts and improvements in their operations may spur additional funding.

Rickenbacker still in red as county’s subsidy deal expires

Rickenbacker Airport is in its final year of a 10-year, $43 million subsidy from Franklin County taxpayers but is still not profitable and is struggling to land a major cargo-shipping business to wean itself off public assistance. County and Rickenbacker officials have used tax dollars to try to get the airport in the black since 1981, when it was converted from a military air base to a cargo operation. The county has since invested $131.2 million, and the airport was to have been solvent by the end of this year.

Airport authority puts 61 acres near Rickenbacker in contract to mystery buyer

The Columbus Regional Airport Authority has placed a 61-acre tract off Rohr Road near Rickenbacker International Airport in contact, but it is mum about identifying the buyer. The authority board will consider the contingent contract for the Groveport property during a meeting next Tuesday.
