Restaurants Join Mayor In Fight Against Obesity

Columbus officials and area restaurants are launching a new program aimed at curbing a growing obesity problem in the city.

Mayor Michael Coleman joined officials from Columbus Public Health and executives from Bob Evans Farms Inc. (NASDAQ:BOBE), Donatos Pizzeria LLC and the Central Ohio Restaurant Association to unveil the Healthy Choices Committee. The group will be working with restaurants to give customers more nutritional information and promote healthy menu items.

Yeah, eating at Donatos will help fight obesity.

Don't get me wrong, I like Donatos pizza, but does anyone else think this fight is a load of horse shit?

Half the problem with unhealthy food is the preservatives and artificial crap they put into it. It's harder for your body to break down...

If you eat 1/4th of a pizza and a salad, yes. If you shove everything in your mouth that's in front of you, probably not, unless that's your only splurge of the week.

Meh. I just don't eat it as much. If I do eat pizza, I just control how much I eat (usually 1/4th of the pie, around 700 calories and 30 grams of fat).

sixby9is42, sorry but if you're battling obesity I fail to see how anything on Donato's menu is a "healthy choice". People go there to eat pizza not salad.

We do have restaurants and dining options in Columbus that present "healthy choices", but Donatos is not one of them.

The packaged foods industry tried a similar approach called "Smart Choices" and even had "experts" who were willing to say that Froot Loops and Fudgecicles were nutritious, smart choices.

Thankfully they were shot down when it was clear they were going to be legally challenged:

Of course, the way most people eat pizza or any other food (eat until they feel stuffed), it's not a healthy choice. But with restaurants like Applebee's promoting meals under 550 calories, I'm curious to see if Donatos creates new menu items with less calories or if they'll just promote what they currently have. Even if people buy low calorie meals, there's nothing stopping them from eating more than one of them, which defeats the purpose.

I'm wondering how many consumers will actually take advantage of this program.

Some people care. I'm not sure what mandatory caloric disclosure entails in other cities, but when I'm in New York, the amount of calories in those Starbucks muffins are clearly displayed on a placard under them in the case. All 700 calories. That influences my decision.

Disclosing the amount of calories is fine, although I'm skeptical of it. However, the city teaming with a business and promoting something like pizza as a "healthy choice" is outright deception in my book.

Not many, probably.

I don't consider any restaurant or prepack food healthy. Things like that have to sell, selling them requires they taste good, things that make food taste good aren't healthy.

If it doesn't taste like cardboard, it's not healthy. Food is fuel, not pleasure.

For those who want to eat healthy, they're already not customers and I doubt they'd be persuaded by a little green sticker.

For those who are customers, I doubt they're concerned about eating healthy.

ItÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s all about moderation. You certainly could eat Donatos and still lose weight and have a healthy diet of course thatÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s only if you have the will power to put down the food after the 15th slice. That is something a lot of people are just not willing to do. Pretty obvious since we as a country have a weight issue.

Yes - people are generally ignorant of nutrition (witness my coworker who thought that doing the Atkins diet meant eating nothing but bacon, sausage, eggs, fried chicken and pork rinds and now has to limit her sodium intake severely).

I would actually appreciate more menus with caloric information - especially for items like salads, where the trend is to add so much to the salad, then douse it with 500 calories worth of dressing, so that it ends up being more than the average pasta dish, calorically.

What, you mean adding a pound of shredded cheese and bacon bits to tasteless leafy greens then soaking the whole mess in ~~blue cheese~~ liquid fat isn't healthy? I'm shocked... Shocked, I say!

One problem right now with Donato's nutritional information is that they measure it by 1/4th of a pizza. With the way they cut it into squares, it's pretty much impossible to get just 1/4th of the pizza unless you cut it up yourself.

Right, I agree. The thing is this is a defensive move in my opinion.

Not that I think it's right, but I don't think it's unrealistic to think that we will see massive class action lawsuits against restaurants and packaged foods companies, which are similar to what's happened to the tobacco industry.
