My brother and I had dinner at Cap City Diner on Olentangy River Road today. I decided to try the meat loaf because I have always heard that it is one of their signature dishes.
I have to admit, I am disappointed in what I got for my money.....so much so that it has kinda been nagging me all night that I paid what I did for this meal.
Basically, the dish consisted of an average slice of bread (toast), topped by what might have been 1/3 lb of meatloaf, about 3/4 inch thick, roughly the size of the bread. This was in turn topped by a scoop of mashed potatoes and some fine onion rings. There was also a couple small pieces of broccoli on either side of the meatloaf. The dish was covered in bbq gravy.
The gravy tasted pretty good, but the meatloaf itself was rather bland. The potatoes were pretty good.
Now....add a Diet Pepsi, tax, and a 20% tip for a grand total of $22.
I left Cap City feeling like I just paid $22 for what was actually the equivalent of a hamburger, fries and a Pepsi. From an ingredients perspective, this meal is essential the equivalent of a bland hamburger.
Now, I have this image in my head of Cameron Mitchell sitting in a board room somewhere telling his staff something like, "OK...watch and learn.....I am going to show you how to sell a hamburger, fries and a Pepsi in Columbus for $22. It can be done.....all you have to do is to dress it up like meatloaf and serve it with a smile! Wooo ha ha ha"
Maybe I am over-reacting, but for some reason I just feel like I was ripped off big time. But the place was packed. Apparently the market feels that these prices are peachy.
