Anyone else watching?
Sarah Palin is giving her acceptance speech. I've stated in another thread that we should leave her family out of this, but I gotta ask: Why is her baby there? Most infants don't respond too well to shrill screaming and cheering.

I loved the comparison yesterday of McCain to Thomas Jefferson.
The kid is there to foster sympathy. Imagine the first attack ad against her with the image of her little girl slicking back Trig's hair floating in your head.
I'm honestly loving the cynical brilliance in this pick for McCain. There are so many things you can question about her, but how do you do it without it slinging back?
Too many pitfalls of being labeled sexist, anti-family. You highlight Barack's inexperience by highlighting hers. You highlight how outside the beltway she is (PTA Hockey Mom) and you highlight just how inside they are.
I'm still waiting for the day the GOP trots out the first gay, hispanic, transgendered, Hindu VP nomination.

She just mispronounced Lancaster while mentioning McCain's fellow POW, Tom Moe - LANcaster, Ohio. I think they just lost Fairfield County. :P

I'm from Kirkersville. Trust me, I know Lancaster. I took the SAT at OU-Lancaster, I ran at the Lancaster cross country invitational (and followed the team to the Southeast regional), I shopped at River Valley Mall down there, and a fair number of people in my church at Buckeye Lake were from Lancaster (and Pleasantville and similar smaller towns outside Lancaster that most people even in Columbus couldn't find on a map).
I still say McCain would have to confess to being a homosexual atheist and Palin would have to get an abortion and a divorce to lose Fairfield County. :P

I agree McCain doesn't have a problem winning in Fairfield... I've been wondering (based on growing up in Union County) how many people with strong feelings regarding race and gender like my grandparents are boycotting this election, even though they normally vote an all-Republican ticket. According to grandma this country is going to hell :?

I honestly believe that is her only role in this election is to be Mac's Cheney. How do you honestly try to attack back when her speech ends with her family on stage and her holding that darling little boy?
It's pretty damn sad when the 2 major parties, that were once respected and produced great statesmen and women, are now nothing more than two bit whores, schilling for every conceivable vote.

I think she did what she could in the speech, and did it well. It's becoming more and more clear to me who they're trying to appeal to, and as much as I still think disgruntled Hillary supporters are on the list, I think the Ron Paulers are pretty high up there too.

I was hearing shades of Paul in her speech. The problem is that most of the Paulites are going to go third party or write in.
The only difference is that he shot from the hip, speaking what he felt was the truth and not giving a damn who he pissed off. That was very refreshing in today's political world.

I'll give the republicans credit for one thing...they're always well organized.
Every speaker towed the party line...
1) The eastern elitist liberal media is out to get us
2) Terrorists are going to blow up your family
3) Obama will raise your taxes...no matter what his plan says
4) Palin has loads of executive experience
#1 was a huge sell, because the media keeps trying to correct #3 and #4. If the repubs can kill the media's credibility, then the other messages stick with voters.

i've been watching for the past two nights... some things i haven't heard because of all the POW, people of color/gender speech fillers, service, Islamic extremist, white noise: policy plans, i hear change but i don't hear any concrete propositions to support that change; a whole lot of rhetoric pandering to xenophobic jingoistic emotions; empty statements on issues that have little to do with good governance (styrofoam columns jab). i can't help but think that most of america doesn't understand that issues/values voting doesn't make for better governance. it's a discourse that rewards similarities between groups, stifles innovations of governance, and severely hinders our position in international politics & economy (china is an easy target, but GOP hasn't addressed how the EU market is overtaking US in terms of desirability and sheer size).
one last thing: the debate over palin's "experience" hasn't touch upon her educational background at all. has anyone read anything about her academics at all?
