Anyone else seen a HUGE increase in your renter's insurance this year? I just got my renewal and it more than doubled. I called to find out why and the only explanation I got was something about registering rates with the state every year and based on that these are the new rates. I don't know what that means, but I wasn't happy with the answer. I've online quoted a few others and they are pretty in line which makes me think I'm SOL. I know this is one of my smallest expenses, but since I'm required to have it I'd like it to be as little as possible!

Renewed mine a couple of months ago for $120 per year. Kinda seemed silly not to get it. I have had some friends who have been in apt fires - definitely worth it imho.

That's what I was paying, now it's come in for $310. Yes, like I said, it's not that big of a deal and I'm not NOT going to do it, I'm just wondering if there's something I'm missing or if there's others that are experiencing the same thing. My zip is 43215, btw, so I'm guessing I'm asking specifically people in my zip code.

I'd say it's time to shop insurance! That's ridiculous.

Ok...here's what I pay...
$261 for the year for $25k in coverage with a $500 deductible. Our zip codes are pretty close, so I don't think that would cause huge variation. But I have been with my agent since I was 16 and my mom has been since before I existed, so I think that helps. And I have my car and bike with them too.Posted 2 years ago # -
that's EXPENSIVE. I'd definitely shop around. I pay $114.00 a year. I don't live in 43215, but still. What is it about 43215 that would make the insurance so costly?

I bundled my condo insurance with my car insurance through AAA and saved a ton. I was paying like $56 for car alone and now its only like $60-$70 a month for both. There is an office in Worthington off Wilson bridge or im sure you can do it online/phone.

mine is about $12 a month. it is bundled with my car insurance. do you get all your insurance in one place? cause that would give you a discount. also, I just changed my insurance from a place my parents had used forever to another company which saved me loads of money. so, definitely shop around.

I have Progressive (auto and renters). Checked Geico (which is Liberty Mutual for renters) and got $266. Nationwide $303. State Farm quoted $174, but it wasn't clear if that was replacement or not so I asked them to have an agent contact me. I'll totally jump ship on all my insurance if they can even match my current rates. I get really angry when companies don't appreciate customer loyalty :)

We are in a different zip, and we have ours bundled with car insurance but it is less than $200 (even with some added coverage). I just got the renewal package. Ours is with 21st century.

I'm obviously in a very different ZIP code (44308), but Liberty Mutual, as of my last payment (3/24/10), was only $67.50 per half, so $135/yr. Maybe I'll get a shock when the next half's payment comes due. :-(
ETA: I'm not sure to what extent insurance companies are even aware of specific buildings, but the building I live in was built to withstand anything short of a Soviet attack or a full-fledged zombie apocalypse. Not sure if that gets me any extra discount or not.
