Hate to be a debbie-downer (or whatever the male equivalent is,, billy-bummer? hah), but I can't imagine driving in from out of town to deal with the mess of people for that.

From all the fuss made, I had pretty high expectations about the fireworks and was let down. I was expecting something at least on par with the big WEBN fireworks down in Cincy, with all the talk of it being the biggest display in the midwest.

Maybe it's just because I was watching from Goodale?

It was still fun and I'm glad I watched.

Went with my mom, just got back about 30-40 minutes ago. She was very impressed with the fireworks, and with Columbus in general. She sounded like a broken record as she continuously said "This is sooo nice!" about the Arena District/Downtown as we walked through. She was very sold on the city tonight. She also loved the variety of stores along in the Short North. She's a big art fan, so the illuminated galleries were particularly impressive. She was also amused by the store with the female mannequin holding a whip.

On the other hand, the fist fight brawl in front of the Convention Center on the way back was something we could have done without. Waited for it to turn into guys just looking at each other saying "What! What!" a lot with their shirts off, and then we crossed the street to avoid being near them. Also could have done without the guy and girl who SCREAMED profanity at us because we were "holding up traffic" as we crossed one of the side streets (1st Ave?) while we had a walk sign. Sorry you had to wait to make your right turn buddy. I know you'll never get those 5 seconds back. I was with my mom, so I just smiled at the guy and waved instead of giving him an impromptu refresher course on the nature of the pedestrian-vehicle relationship as it pertains to crosswalks.

On a related note: I don't know how I just became aware of this...people swear all the time, but until today I never really noticed the sheer volume of F bombs you'll hear people say (yell really) with no remorse in public. I guess when you're with mother you become more aware of people who need their mouths washed out with soap.

Thankfully, we saw Help is on the Way to bring the Columbus experience to a fun and fitting close.

happy independence day everyone!

was anyone fortunate enough to see any of channel 4's coverage of the event last night? there was some older, almost billy-bob thornton looking dude wearing a short sleeve shirt with a tie and vest, topped off with a baseball hat. this dude was shuffling around people and jockeying for camera time real hard. he motioned to the camera guys like he wanted them to come in with the mics and the cabot rea but i never saw it happen... anyone else notice that troll? it wasn't me or anyone i know, by the way. just wondering if someone saw him and knows if he was a planted stooge or just a weirdo.

now go grill and drink you commies

I watched from CDS Sherm's roof this year and everything was great! The wind was blowing the smoke elsewhere and we had a great view. Last year the smoke seemed to hang right in view. Thanks Chris!

I thought the show itself was better than last years. A few of us commented that we hadn't seen some of the types of fireworks before. Great job to the event organizers.

On the way out we were watching all kinds of mayhem. A lot of families and a lot of belligerent people swearing and some fighting. Some people have zero consideration.

I stayed in and watched it on the TV. Had to deal with the terrified Schnauzer who wouldn't leave my side as the neighbors shot off fireworks and I believe guns.

Ahhhh... Red, Whitetrash and Boom. I saw the fireworks from the parking lot of El Vaquero. That's about as close as I'll ever get to downtown that night. Yuck! Now somebody grill me a hotdog, STAT!

I thought it would go without saying that you should let go of the thing once flames started shooting out of it, but then again, I'm obviously no paragon of firework safety. To your credit, you dropped it pretty quickly when it exploded.

We went to Sherman's and enjoyed the fireworks very much. I also got some entertainment value out of watching the crush of traffic leaving downtown. At one point some impatient drivers tried to bypass the line of waiting cars on McDowell by going the wrong way up the opposite lane... they got their comeuppance when a fire engine had to get through!

We drove up Broad Street close to midnight. The litter was appalling. The few trash receptacles we saw were overflowing, which left the rest of the garbage to blow all over the sidewalks and streets -- and down into the river. Columbusites need to learn to pack out.

Perhaps Red, Whitetrash and Boom should be run by volunteers instead of privately funded. Bet the streets would have been clean.

I was downtown this morning and while I didn't check out every street, what I did see already looked cleaned up.

I imagine that they wait for everyone to completely leave before the cleanup begins. Expecting clean streets at midnight last night might be jumping the gun a bit.

I didn't expect pristine streets last night. I also didn't expect to be dodging piles of beer bottles in the road. I'm just disappointed that a)the city did not have enough receptacles to collect trash and b)citizens did not have enough sense to take it with them rather than throw it on the ground.

And it hurts that it happened on a day devoted to patriotism. Double the irony when you realize people were throwing their refuse about just after hearing that Lee Greenwood song.

We were out late enough last night to see the first Contract Sweepers vehicle come up from GV, so we knew it was going to be cleaned up. But still, it was honestly the worst litter I have seen in any city after any event -- and I was in Seattle for the WTO and Mardi Gras riots.
