that's cute sherm.

I usually go to a friends house in Franklinton tons of great views in that part of town. Also if you know it well you know how to avoid the traffic situation.
There's some Artist types hanging over an JV to watch as well. Its a little bit farther out, but, the company will be good. I'm dragging my gas grill down around 6 for a BYOM(V) cookout. If ya know me, you're welcome to join and hang out in my messy woodchip filled studio.
Also, I've heard rumor there will fewer police (and fewer directing traffic out of downtown). Is this true?
yes, the normal amount of police who normally work on friday will be present doing their thing. In addition sponsors of boom have paid for additional officers. The city said they will not be adding any other officers or overtime for boom due to the city budget. (you can find this somewhere on city budget cuts etc somewhere here on CU.)
Keeping in mind due to any major issues they can always call officers in.

OUr neighborhood will do terrible today, so the corn-dog stand and glow stick man might be kicking more tax dollars in than usual, but we'll be kicking in a lot less.
I agree with you that people probably aren't out to go clothes shopping in the Short North tonight, but I'd imagine that most of the restaurants and bars will do quite well in the neighborhood.
We're planning on meeting up with some suburbanite friends before hand for dinner at Flat Iron. They picked the restaurant. We have't been in years. I'm looking forward to it.
So while it's not quite a thousand-dollar Short North shopping spree for us tonight, it's also not a cashplosion for GlowStickMan or ThreeDollarBottledWaterMan from us either. And I'd have to think that I'm not alone with these types of local-spending endeavors tonight...
I imagine the Arena District & Park Street will be even more busy than usual for a Friday Night, as well as Barrio, Tip Top, and some other similar Downtown local businesses. Hell, some people might even venture into James Club 88. ;)
I agree. I think some people will make a lot of money tonight (and actually our day is going pretty well right now so I could be wrong anyway) but I think there are a lot of events like Comfest that are touted as being net economic gains for the city but the losses to other businesses aren't factored in to the figures you read.

But in the grand scheme it's still a gain, right? Not something we should be doing away with.
Besides, shouldn't the free market dictate things?
Fireworks are a symbol of freedom you terrorist trendster.

I don't know if it's a net gain or not. I guess it would be, I would say approx. 100 retailers are effected negatively, so lets say an average of 500 bucks off from normal, it is just $50,000 and the rise in bar and restaurant sales plus street vendors for Red White And Boom I would say way more than compensate for that loss, now comfest you're talking about Restaurants and Bars loosing as well, and over three days plus you are drawing so much traffic from around the city that your hurting more than just Short North B&M's so the figure would be huge. That said, Comfest is part of the fabric of this neighborhood and I am definitely not smart enough to calculate events that make the neighborhood cool, or visual impressions that weekend that don't want to shop but make a return trip, so while that weekend sucks for sales, it may actually be a positive thing in the end.
temps drop again tonight (fall in July? craziness) anyway you might get a few sales from those not dressed for it and want a longsleve.
I'll have to swing by during hop and see If what I can buy.
Thanks! I am turning out to be incredibly wrong about red white and boom's effects as well so... well that's it, I am just admitting I was wrong.
^^^^^
walker this would be the perfect time to bring back signature lines. ;-) just kidding!
Hey, I occasionally admit when I am wrong.
I'm glad that you're not having as bad of a day as you expected. ;) It seems like it's always hard to tell how things will shape up.
I'd like to also think that with big events like RW&B, you'll see a lot of foottraffic who may not stop in today, but may return to visit another day after finding out that you exist. I'm always surprised to hear that some people rarely set foot in the Short North and don't know what they're missing out on. ;)
My wife and I will be at M watching from their patio. It should be a good view.
Just saw some shots of downtown on the news. There's a shitload of coolers.
We are having a great day and so is Paradise Garage from what I hear. I think it will just get better for us as more people head downtown.

Yeah, we have been slammed all day. I am trying to get our new stuff on the floor and haven't even had time to put a sign up and go get my afternoon slice! I tried to eat this microwave meal that was a bag of chicken, broccoli and pasta. I got about two bites down and decided I would rather go hungry.
Just got home, and my feet are killing me. Hit up Flat Iron for dinner (gumbo FTW) and walked around the madness for about 90 minutes. Got Desi a BombPop. ;) Walked over to tip top to hang out for a bit, and then watched the fireworks from the 19th floor of the Huntington Building. Great view! :D
Even if you don't like fireworks, it's fun to watch the madness at Broad & High afterwards. Tons of people everywhere. Fun people watching. ;)
