Recent uptick in crime in Italian Village

As a member of the Italian Village Block Watch I'm particularly concerned about what seems like a recent uptick in muggings/assaults that has been happening in the Italian Village/Short North area lately.

The other day my roomie was just outside smoking and two individuals that were victims of a mugging right on 1st behind the UDF came running by screaming for help, one had a bloody face and said he had a gun held to his head and was beaten up. Both had their wallets, money and phones stolen from them. My roomie allowed them to use his phone to file a police report. Other block watch members have reported other muggings on 1st and 2nd in the Short North, usually two males jumping one or two other males.

I can't help but wonder if the recent redistricting of the CPD has anything to do with the lack of police response monitoring these areas more closely to prevent this type of activity from occuring.

I have friends who are reporting a similar increase in crime in Weinland Park. I do not know if that is in the same district.

Sadly though, it is probably due to summer in bad economic times and the increase of people with low morals and little to do being out on the street. It is very important that everyone in these situations files a police report. Personally, I think I have noticed an increased police presence in that area along High St. I saw the police intervening in something by Mouton this afternoon.

While not a solution, as a nearby resident I'd be interested in knowing what day/time this happened so I can be more alert in my own travels. Not saying I couldn't get mugged walking down High St. for lunch, but it is a bit more different after dusk.

IF this post seems condescending I apologize...but...

1. I realize that most "city warnings" include a don't make eye contact message. Bullshit. Make eye contact with strangers. Don't keep it, but make it. It tells them you're not afraid, it tells them you can identify them, and its likely to make them pick another mark.

2. Keep your hands out of your pockets and free. If your hands are in your pockets, you're unable to defend yourself and you look like you're hiding something. If they are loose and at your side, they look like the hands of someone without fear and able to defend...and more importantly, they're ready to defend if needed.

3. If you're in a sketchy neighborhood, leave your phone in your pocket. You wouldn't tape a hundred dollar bill to your forehead and walk around Italian Village, so don't wave your two hundred dollar I-Phone around either.

4. Know your surroundings. There are other people on the streets, in the alleys and porches you pass, watch what they do and know what's going on around you. If they can't get the jump on you, they're not close enough to rob you. No one points a gun from a block away and yells a robbery, they're up close enough to get it done without witnesses and get away fast.

I'm not blaming victims here, but I'm recommending ways to not be one. If you're walking in the hood wearing skinny jeans, avoiding eye contact and therefore not seeing what people are doing, while texting on your i-phone...you're gonna get mugged. If you're walking with a purpose, hands at your side, making eye contact and nodding a hello or "wassup" to the people you pass you are an alert and capable individual who will cause more problems than the next mark along.

There are less CPD officers on the beat in the SN,VV, IV, Olde Towne and GV.
We need more police officers on bikes, on horses and on foot in these great neighborhoods... Lots more bad foot traffic in the SN, WP and GV than what existed 2 years ago....we need more resources to fight crime and the precinct redistricting hurt all these urban communities by distorting manpower to other areas like Hilltop, Linden and 161 - lets protect the core

yeah, 'cause, you know there are never ANY problems in Hilltop, Linden, or 161...

Resources are spread thin all over town. Its just an unfortunate situation that needs to be dealt with and not by making sacrificial lambs of neighborhoods you don't happen to think are valuable.

All neighborhoods are valuable, but the CPD should focus where the per capita density is highest i.e in the core like GV and the SN, then the next ring out ie. IV, Old North/Campus and Olde Towne, Next ring out Merion village etc, this is where the impact of precious scarce resources can be greatest!

I like that GV and SN are core neighborhoods with IV as "next ring out" locations, as if I can't stand on one side of the street and see into the other district. I wonder if the legal SN boundaries were actually factored in the population density would actually be larger than that of the Linden area. You might as well just say protect High St. and let the rest sort itself out.

I can't believe the population in SN is that much more Dense than the hilltop, isn't hilltop primarily residential?
