Ginger beer is stronger/spicier than ginger ale. I think Giant Eagle only carries Reed's which I would avoid. Independent stores like Weilands and Hills usually have a better selection. Bundaberg I usually get from World Market. I bought some cock n' bull last time I went to Jungle Jim's and that was good too.

Left Hand Brewing Co's Juju Ginger is great on a hot summer day.

They're talking ginger beer, Jack, not ginger beer.

When my sister lived in Miami I'd try rums not available here, and I was often disappointed. A harsh-tasting rum can't be hidden, even behind cola or fruit juice, it just tastes bad.

I'm a rum fan. Cruzan is very nice, and not too expensive for an everyday drink. I totally endorse the rum + ginger beer + lime idea. I add a little salt, too, actually - reminds me of drinking this in the Caribbean. Barrett's ginger beer is incredible. Seek it out/special order it. It's that good.

Rum: I had a great bottle of banana rum from St Thomas that got polished off before I even made it back to the States. Went exceedingly well on the rocks, but the brand is lost in a foggy memory bank someplace.
Cachaca: I mixed up some with garlic on a chilly summer night and I still miss the flavors; I need to pick up a bottle next time I am out. Thanks Mercurius for letting me play around in the bar.

Nassau Royale liqueur, which is rum based, is pretty tasty. Forgot about that.

I drank an ass-ton of caipirinhas in Key West last week, can anyone recommend a decent cachaça that's available here? I want something good, but not TOO good since I'll be mixing with it. I might wanna try some straight from time to time though.

On a whim I stopped by the liquor store on the way home from work the other day and bought a bottle of Leblon, which is considered an "ultra-premium" cachaça from Brazil. Apparently it's one of the best cachaças on the market. One of Leblon's signature traits is that its distilled in Brazil, but later shipped to France and aged in XO cognac casks from to give it added character. I wanted to go with a cheaper cachaça since I'd mostly be mixing with it to make caipirinhas, but Leblon was all they had, oh well.
I've gotta say I'm really digging it. I've gone through most of the bottle already. I've drank some of it on the rocks and it's very interesting & complex. I'm no connoisseur by any means, but it has some really nice sugary & citrus flavors, maybe some pear notes.
I've mainly been making caipirinhas with it, which really brings out the best of this stuff. Throw a half of a lime cut into small wedges into a rocks glass, add an ounce of simple syrup (or a couple teaspoons of sugar) and muddle it for about 15 seconds. Top off the glass with ice and add 2 oz. of cachaça. Put a shaker on top of the rocks glass and shake it for about 10 seconds and you're good to go.
I'll be stocking up on a few more bottles as the weather gets nicer. Great summer drink.

Leblon is indeed a pretty good choice in Ohio. (Incidentally, it, like Cabana, which you should stay AWAY from) is produced as an export brand... they don't drink it much in Brazil.
I'm not sure if 61 is still available in Ohio, but it is a bit more authentically Brazillian in character, as is Pitu, I think.
For myself, I usually use the Leblon. Here's a post I did comparing cachaças a while back: Cachaça Battle!

A friend brought a bottle of this to one of our last cigar events and it was awesome.

It drank like candy. but.. I'm not sure you can get it in Ohio.

You can't get Zaya here. And yes, it is awesome.
Try it is an Old Fashioned.
2 oz. Zaya
1/2 oz. simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters.
Stir it on the rocks, and no muddled oranges, cherries, or any other of that crap. Garnish with a slice of orange peel if you are feeling fancy.Posted 1 year ago # -
nice. I was just sipping it.
Pretty sure it came from The Party Source in Newport. Some of the guys were also raving about another bottle that was there...

but I didn't get to try any.
