Um, I'm acting in this one, so please come and support a fellow CUer if you have the chance...
Jacob M. Appel, the same playwright as last season’s hit Arborophilia, takes us into a classic story of gods and love with a not-so-classic approach in Helen of Sparta. This comedic re-imagining of the Trojan War comes from the point of view of Helen, a spoiled diva with a taste for zinfandel and world domination.
Helen of Sparta (Gabrielle Perrea) has been snatched from her home and husband by the dashing but perhaps overzealous Paris (Brian Spangler). While Paris attempts to woo the beautiful Helen, her husband Menelaus (Edwyn Williams) attempts to rescue her but gets caught up in customs as he discovers he is on the national "do not sail" list. Meanwhile, Protesilaus (Gregory Kimbro) is determined to live on in history for centuries to come through this fledgling war, even if that means shrugging off his adoring wife Laodamia (Krista Threadgill), ignoring prophesies and walking straight into certain death.
Appel again proves he is a master of leaving nothing sacred, even Hades. But between wagons full of pears and corkscrews a la gods, the hilarity will help any classical purist forgive the liberties and roll in the laughs.
