COLUMBUS LANDMARKS FOUNDATION PRESENTS
"LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF" and FILMMAKER THOM ANDERSEN
The Columbus Landmarks Foundation will present a special screening of the Award-winning film, Los Angeles Plays Itself on Sunday, May 18 at 3:30 pm at the Drexel East. The screening will include an appearance by the film's writer and director, Thom Andersen, a former Columbus resident who now teaches film at the California Institute of the Arts.
Los Angeles Plays Itself, as a sprawling documentary of how one of the most depicted and mythologized cities in the world, Los Angeles has been depicted in film and television. The film features clips from over 191 American movies, from well know titles such as Blade Runner, Chinatown, and L.A. Confidential, to rarer finds such as Killer of Sheep, The Exiles and great noir classics like Mildred Pierce and Kiss Me Deadly. The director showcases Los Angeles's architecture as subject, background, and ultimately main character of the city. Frequently sardonic, at times flat-out funny, Anderson simply notices things about these movies and the way they depict Los Angeles, that the rest of us don't see. The cumulative effect is spellbinding and provocative.
Tickets for Los Angeles Plays Itself and director Thom Andersen's appearance are $15. Tickets are on sale at the Drexel Theatre: 2254 E. Main St. By phone: (614) 231-1050 or purchase
online at drexel.net.
The screening is being presented as part of the "Mysteries of the seldom-seen City" program which includes Columbus: Forbidden City, a special tour of lesser-known and seldom seen places in Downtown Columbus. The tour is Saturday, May 31 starting at 9:00 a.m. For more information on the screening and the tour call Columbus Landmarks at (614) 221-0227 or visit http://www.columbuslandmarks.org
