I found a cell phone that someone must have lost. Any thoughts on the best way to get it back to its owner? Should I just leave it where I found it in case they come back looking for it, or should I pick it up so that no one steals it?
Is there an obvious way to notify the owner that I am overlooking??

I found one once and just called the recently dialed calls until I got a hold of someone who knew how to get in touch with the owner.
It took a while though, because I found it on a saturday morning, and evidently the phone's owner was a bit of a drunk dialer. She had called a bunch of random people the night before, most of whom hadn't talked to her in months.

Call people in the contact list. I left my phone at Pistachio and they did that. Contact picked it up for me.
Google the phone number which will tell you who owns the exchange, then call customer service.
Call hookers and drug dealers on the phone. Enjoy the fruits of your labor and then call 911 to let the police sort it out.
Drop it off at the police. That happened with Elena's cell phone.

Find out who the carrier is (most likely listed on the phone). Drop it off at one of their stores.
They can pull up all personal info on the person (normally including another phone number) and can get it back to them.

How about call your phone with it and check the caller ID? :roll:
You could even do a reverse lookup @ whitepages.com to possibly find a name AND address. Then you could call them or mail it to them!

true, whitepages allows you to search people by their number, so if you wanted to drop it off you could, though i wouldnt if it's too far.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I ended up calling a few of the contacts in the phone until I found someone who was able to contact the owner. The owner's mom called me back right away and they were over here in about 20 minutes to pick it up.
It turned out that the phone belonged to my teen-aged Columbus Dispatch carrier who had lost it while delivering papers in the morning. When I handed him the phone, he offered me a $20 billl, which I obviously turned down (nice gesture though). It was funny to see how focused he was on catching up with all of the text messages that he had missed throughout the day (they were coming in at a rate of about 1 every 10 minutes while the phone was sitting on my table).
Once again, thanks for the input. My main concern was that I wasn't sure if it was considered wrong to look through the contacts in the phone. As it turns out, it was the right thing to do.
