I see it still has a 120Gb HDD, which should be plenty for most gamers ... does it sacrifice anything? (Sorry, too lazy to read the whole article.)

Apparently same as the current models but a newer smaller processor, a matte finish, and no longer can add another operating system like Lynux. With the price drop, after the old ones are all sold, you may hear people grumbling for BC PS2/1 option put back on a new higher priced model.
The PS3 isn't BC to PS2 games? I thought it only lost PSX games ...

Current versions have no BC at all. The last ones with that were the Motorstorm and Metal Gear (the one I have) bundles, and then it ended, as a way to reduce costs and drop the price to compete.

Wow that's lame. There goes any reason I had for getting a PS3 since I've got a bunch of PS2 and 1 games from years ago.

blu-ray and when ever a new FF is released is enough reason to get one IMO
Seems like this will be good for Sony. At $300 it is pretty competitive with x-box esp. with a large hard drive, built in wifi, and free online. Lots of great exclusives coming too, as well as the multi-platform games.
They lost PS2 compatibility awhile ago. A shame, maybe they'll add it back via software emulation in the future.
Also, it's a great blu-ray player.

Yeah, the release of the new FF is likely going to be a decision time for me. However, without BC, I may well wait even longer. I can deal without the new FF for a little while because all the old ones have good replay value. (In fact, this thread just reminded me that I've been meaning to order FFIX for a while, since there's a gap in my collection there ...) Maybe they'll have a version in 2010 or 2011 that's not slimline but has PSX/PS2 BC and still goes for $300. I've got shelf space to spare, but I'd want that BC.
I own both a PS3 and an XBOX 360....I never play my PS3. This is one situation where Microsoft kills the competition hands down. I'm wondering why PS3's online portion is so pathetic? They claim the PS3's graphics are better, but I strain to see any difference. Apparently it has been a miserable failure for Sony. Thinking about getting rid of my PS3..hell, I play my PS2 more than the PS3. Speaking of that, I read something the other day that the PS2 is far outselling the PS3

It was for a while after the PS3 launched, but I think the PS3 has overtaken it. The PS2 is still by far the best-selling of the sixth-generation game consoles (both cause and effect of it being still in production, I'd guess). The XBox, Dreamcast, and GameCube are all pretty much history.
This site is actually pretty impressive in the amount of data it has and can put into chart form. The PS3 is outselling the PS2 worldwide this year, and outsold it last year, too (10 million to 8.2 million). Of course, that latter figure is an incredible performance by an ostensibly obsolete game system, particularly from a company that currently has three systems out (don't forget the PSP).

what's so bad about your ps3? game selection? Most games are on both platforms of ps3 and 360.... do you just buy the 360 version?
I sadly don't have either (bought a wii that collects dust) Looking to get a HD console soon.

I though that early PS3s had PS2 Compatibility.. To be honest lack of PS2/PSX games does cut my desire for a PS3 pretty dramatically.. I'm not much of a gamer, but I'd probably pop in Ico, Wipeout or Super Bust-a-Move on a regular basis in addition to whatever entertainment center features I might have on PS3..
Sadly my WII collects dust as well.. I do enjoy it when it does get turned on...
I believe the next FF is coming to 360 also. I want PS3 just for the Blu-Ray capability. Regular Blu-Ray player cost just as much.

I can buy most of the ps2/x games that I want for 5-10 bucks via the PS Store. That helps my wants out. Sucks to buy some games a 2nd time, but it's not like I'm paying 40 bucks again.
Otherwise, I enjoy my ps3, quite a bit. Wish I had more time to play.
Joystiq has a nice table up of the different SKU's released.
