I love Meleca Architecture!!! I can't believe how beautiful Easton looked. Don't get me wrong, I love Easton. But wow just look how it could've been. I really hope the Columbus Common's builds those Meleca towers and we regret it 30 years down the road. Speaking of which, if City Center would've looked like that would've Easton, Tuttle, or Polaris have been built? Also would it have hurt Downtown retail as well?

I love their designs (this coming from a guy who complains about the overuse of brick all the time) I especially love that BalletMet one. The Easton rendering would have been much better than what we have if built. The Easton of today looks like Disneyland. It's pretty generic. The only reason I can think of as to why these guys aren't used more is that they use ALOT of detail in their design, which may be a little too much for today's cost conscious developers to handle.

That Easton rendering was way back when the original idea behind Easton was to have a complete new urbanist like "town" instead of a mall with separate residential townhouses and apartments.
Too bad the original concept wasn't kept, the financers were too worried people would never live there. Now, from what I hear, the residential isn't doing so hot but that was just hearsay.

Also, for those interested in more info, here's an audio podcast interview with David Meleca from Feb 2009:

In my opinion, the residential component of Easton is pretty removed from the "buzz" of the mall. The excitement of living at Easton would have been all the cool little apartments above all the shops....not endless developer tract apartments across a busy street.

I remember Yaromir Steiner expressing disbelief about it at the ULI Downtown Retail conference back in what '08?

Easton set the precedent for the new town center and other developers have improved upon it ever since. I still think they have plenty of oppotunity to add residential closer to the mall with a little shuffling around. It COULD feel more like a "town center". I also always thought the first light rail line, if and when built, should go to Easton and not Polaris. There is so much more opportunity for TOD from downtown to the airport to Easton. But, I digress. Someone hire Meleca, stat.
